Ding Dong.....the US Politics Thread (Part 1)

Respectfully I disagree, and see evidence of exactly the sort of thing I’m talking about - people being unfair to the religious community - in a recent smattering of posts in this very thread.

This is an example of the unfairness I see against the religious community.

This too.

Not picking on HometownZero as such… just quoting some recent posts in this thread to illustrate the point I’m making, namely, that irreligious people are sometimes unfair against the religious community.

Limiescouse disagrees with that, so I’m quoting a couple posts to illustrate.

I see intolerance and prejudice against the religious community here, especially since most are trying to follow the rules and be respectful, limited capacity, social distancing, masks etc.

My take on the Supreme Court ruling is similar to what Cuomo said. It’s a new court, wanting to put down a marker, as the balance has shifted within the court.

Surely all people who live in a country should be subject to the country’s laws? I know the States can alter these and so should you not all have to comply with their own state rules? Why should the religious be exempt?

Still not started the religion thread…

I don’t feel intolerance or prejudice. I just feel incredulity.

Didn’t you say the other day that Liverpool fans should be left leaning or they could go elsewhere(paraphrasing).

Sadly, I do think intolerance against religions exists, and not only in the US. I don’t have a way of quantifying it, but I would also say it’s increasing. Having said that, when you have an erosion of the time-honored separation between religion and state, then you can get a backlash. It may be intolerance, but it may also be a cynical disbelief in institutional motives. And a public health issue just exacerbates that. I would never justify any intolerance and am personally open to all beliefs—just wondering if the phenomenon is more than that. These are complex times and complex reactions unfortunately.

First of all, America is a bit weird with regard to practicing religion. It is enshrined in the constitution and what we are seeing here in the NYC ruling is what holds sway… the right to practice religion, or the right to put restrictions on religious gatherings.

I think the religious community should follow the laws, especially in a situation that is trying to limit the spread of covid.

My point has been that most do.

When there’s a case to test the boundaries, like this one, to my mind it’s unfair to besmirch the entire religious community, as though they are all in the same place, as most aren’t.

Imagine if a gym owner flouted the covid rules and then I started to say stuff like “fucking weight lifters, think they are better than everyone else.”

Or imagine if tens of thousands of people went to the Cheltenham festival, and I said stuff like, “Shithead toffs don’t think the rules apply to them!”

etc.

I believe whoever said that about going elsewhere only meant @SBYM and I heartily support that view

In my politics I’m left leaning, in case the comment above was meant for me. If not, fair do!

My last post for a bit, as tempers are getting frayed, sadly.

  1. America is a weird old place, and on the religion thing, quite different from Europe for example. The right to practice religion is enshrined in the constitution and people want to run with that.

  2. In this instance, what holds sway? The right to practice religion, or the right of governments to try to limit the spread of the virus? I think the latter, and most people would, but again, America is a weird old place… see above

  3. Most places of worship are following the rules. People are staying away and watching online, or places are open, but with reduced capacity, social distancing, masks, and other measures to be responsible

  4. In light of this it won’t do to attack religion, per se, on the basis of its response to covid. Most are reasonable in their response, trying to do the right thing in difficult circumstances.

Describing other members on here as gobshites led me to the suggestion that that kind of posting would be more suited to bluemoon.
You wrongly took that as me saying you are a city fan.

The word intolerance means:

unwillingness to accept views, beliefs, or behaviour that differ from one’s own.

I can accept that people believe in gods and the almighty but I certainly don’t have to agree with it.
