Good evening, Nifty Ifty. I actually agree with you, but I was trying to write a post without taking a political side (for a change). If you notice, I even threw in the 2008 election to try to remain impartial even though I am an admirer of President Obama.
I agree with the notion that the bubble is inflating too rapidly and it will pop soon, or if managed well, deflate, hopefully in a reasonably orderly way.
Tesla is way too hot, but one of the reasons for that is the Democrat win. The Dems take climate change more seriously, Biden speaks about it, and wants to implement policies to try to tackle it, at least somewhat. I see the Tesla surge as related to that, as is poised to benefit from policies that might be implemented to start to address climate change.
Both/and for me. Whole market too hot. But Tesla also benefits from Dem victory.
Where does this idea of a single starting point for a civil war come from? It won’t be like the German invasion of Poland or the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand. It will be a slow slide punctuated with shocking incidents like we have seen. Charlotte, Lansing, Capitol riot… Like waves of a tide coming in, each pushing a bit further until the sandcastle falls.
I think she meant certain Asian cultures, perhaps specifically Japanese etc and similar cultures, or that’s how I read it anyway. Because it is true for certain richer Asian countries and cultures.
Because yeah, the worst rubbish pollution in the world, is found in Asia in countries with great poverty, and it is from there, the worst pollution of the ocean comes from. But that’s due to the Maslow pyramid. If you are not high enough up on it, you won’t care about the environment or pollution at all, that’s the prerogative of those higher up who have their basic needs and and security taken care of and don’t need to worry about getting food on the table and so on.
I remember when I was in Malaysia in 2007. I was shocked at how they threw rubbish not in the bin, but straight into the sea, but those communities were poor and they had bad infrastructure. At that time, those on that island I visited had only recently got actual public bins I was told, but the people there wasn’t yet used to using them so continued throwing all the rubbish into the ocean. All sorts of plastic, all awful rubbish and special waste that nature just cannot deal with.
Anyway, that’s just a personal anecdote.
Thom Nichols wrote a new article today. They are usually always worth a read (unless it is about bare feet and the indecency of that or Greta Thunberg and how awful it is that children are taken seriously by adults and given public space):
For me several things need to happen, to protect democracy.
Abolish the Supreme Court. Introduce a system of complete independence and no political affiliation. The Supreme court needs to be able to hold and person or party to account.
Government funding of local and independent media. Traditional media is dying, but it’s important to democracy. Papers and news should be for the people, from the people. Not media moguls with political objectives. Set aside say 2bn to independently subsidise local newspapers and arguably national ones.
Introduce legislation for media accountability. Lots of talk recently of Facebook and Twitter. But for me it needs to go further. When you have say fox news calling democrats as communists or left wing radicals it’s nothing short of fear mongering, sowing hatred and division.
Scrap the electoral college. In a democracy the popular count is all that matters.
Strengthen accountability of the president or government. Such much of what Trump (and in UK Johnson) did was by ignoring the norms and expectations. From simple things like declaring conflicts of interest, and financial transparency, campaigning on government property. To general ethics and firing anyone who is not a yes man.
Attack cronyism and nepotism in all forms. It is beyond belief that in this day and age. Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner work in the White House along with Giuliani’s son and Barr’s son-in-law. The likes of Eric Trump and Trump jr exploiting their fathers roles for personal gain.
Scrap paper voting. If you can do your tax online, bank online, get your id online. You should be able to vote online. Voting booths should all be electronic. If needbe use the same technology used in US airports (touch screen, takes your photo, and compares to id)
Scrap the filibuster. This is key to the perception of ineptitude and partisan politics. You can’t have a government in paralysis
Decrease the influence of lobbying organisations. Be it those funded by Koch, the NRA or whoever.
End foreign influenced money spending on elections. It goes without saying China or Russsia undermining elections is bad for democracy.
Limit election spending. 14 billion got spent on US Presidental election, and that is grotesque. In the Georgia run off alone 500 million got spent on adverts.
There are so many things that can be done to help fix the system. Most are not the sexy things that would be immediately popular. But they see long term things to reset the playing field.
@Bekloppt, I know you don’t like me referring to what happened as the Storm, but I think you will agree that the US dep. of Defence is a tad worse. This is imo horrific labeling:
