Sorry, I am probably being unpleasant in this thread today, but this is essentially what I take from this result, which points to a narrow Biden win:
As for being past the point of no return, I don’t know, but I have my fears, If an authoritarian narcissistic sociopath can get this result after 4 years in power, then society is greatly damaged in my view. Anyway. sorry. I won’t always be so pessimistic, but this is a very, very important event also for Europe.
Think it was in a response to mine. Never said it was a disadvantage just explaining as to why the margins were likely not as wide as expected. Covid pulled the suburban voters to the polls in force to vote for Biden. What the dems did not anticipate was, albeit a much smaller swing, that a strong covid response would ultimately lose some of their big margins in highly liberal areas.
They want to be free, no masks, no further lock downs and then covid will magically disappear one day. Keep the economy open everywhere and don’t think too much about people dying. No such stupid things like protecting the community and social distancing etc, that’s just socialistic nonsense. Did I forget something?
We are living in sad times. We knew Trump’s support had hardened and he pushed for that. Ok 45% is bad but I would never have thought it would drop below 40%.
As it is looking now only really Florida is an embarrassment for Biden.
If Biden gets Georgia that can be forgotten, if he gets Pennsylvania it will be like a landslide in the UK. He does need one of these to really make it a ‘victory’ however from my understanding of America, American culture this is a good as it’s going to get (until the democrates wake up and find some charisma).
My apologies. I know this sounds childish, but I just want Joe to win tonight, so I can go back to thinking about the City match on Sunday. Small peanuts, but much more happiness on the footy side.
I think what the high turn out and exit polls RE covid show is a large portion of the electorate didn’t punish trump for his handling of covid because they felt there was nothing to punish.
It is more evidence of the power of the right wing echo chamber. If you look at where Biden lost ground with hispanics it is was generally Cubans and Venezuelans in South Florida and Mexican men (I think specifically educated mexican men). There is a lot going on there to that needs to be unravelled to understand it…issues of how non-anglos view race, issues of how the establishment still fails to appreciate that hispanics need the same number of cross tabs (possibly more) than are applied to the white demo…but a big aspect is these were groups who seemed to react to the presentation of Biden that Trump made. They got turned off by the presentation of him as a riot supporting, anti-police communist. So the man who got criticism from a portion of his own party for being too centrist still got hurt by criticisms of him accusing him of the opposite.
It is pretty clear that an enormous percentage of the US electorate simply doesn’t believe that the coronavirus can be managed, they are just trying to stay afloat long enough for a vaccine to come along.
