yes, Biden is still pulling votes at 70% according to those most recently counted.
I don’t really understand the take. Yes, what he writes is true, but I don’t understand why he thinks the outcome of this election is particularly important in revealing that. The same piece could have been written the morning after his 2016 election. This was a president who no matter how awful he behaved had an approval rating that never went under 40%. Despite the statistical confidence of a Biden win, with how polarized the country is, the bullish predications were being spoken about as a big win only in the context of how polarized we expect the country to be - they were still showing near half the country willing to support this guy.
However, I think the take away is not to treat all these people as if they belong in Hillary’s Basket of Deplorables. Despite the sensationalist coverage of that comment, not even she was arguing for that. The issue is that the information landscape in our society is so broken that a large portion of these people are making their judgments based on a reality that doesn’t exist. On basically every situation that portrays Trump has a dangerous lunatic, there is an information environment that has worked double and triple time to normalize it (Obama built the cages) or deny it, and the reach of that environment is massive. You don’t even need to actively seek it out for it to find you and wedge itself in your brain in a way that influences how you interpret the information you do consciously seek out. That is the bit that scares me, because without conscious and significant change from Fox, Sinclair and Social Media, I don’t know how we get out of this situation.
Interesting stat that throws light on the role that Israel plays in US politics - Trump won the lowest portion of the Jewish vote of any GOP candidate since Bush in 2000. That means more Jews voted for a Mormon than for Trump. Many people tried to play up the recent middle east peace deals (they werent peace deals) as being a positive for their prospects for the Jewish vote, but its never really about that. The role of Israel in GOP politics is always about the Evangelical vote.
What role does the quality of the US education system play in this lack of critical thinking?
It’s something I’ve often wondered about.
I asked almost this very question what seems like a week ago now (it was yesterday) but nobody replied! I see that she describes herself as a libertarian so if she was going to be taking votes from anyone I would presume it would be from Trump…? Would that be fair? Anyone have an opinion on that? Her vote share may also have been crucial for Georgia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina as well (if she is gaining more votes from Republicans than Democrats).
Interesting to hear the way the current situation was reported on the wireless this morning whilst driving…
‘Both Trump and Biden insist they have won the election…’
It was TalkSport (first problem, but they were pounding Utd), not sure where they get their news from, but that statement is sloppy as fuck at best, an outright lie at worst.
That’s a nice way of saying are Americans fucking stupid ![]()
Tbh, I’m a bit disappointed that @FowlersLeftPeg hasn’t done any graphics because Trump getting put in the biffa is something that I think we need in our lives.
Hahaha…maybe…
But I know it is chronically underfunded in many areas…and that the US is way down the charts on a lot of metrics…maths, science etc
Just wondering if it feeds into a populace where a huge chunk does indeed live in a different reality…
Difficult to answer. These may be people who vote for the third choice and rarely for the main parties. If they are largely republican voters, they may dislike Trump and not vote for him under any circumstance but also refuse to vote for Democrat - so what other options would be on the ballett (none of the above etc)
Should start with abandoning those stupid multiple choice tests, do they still do that these days?
I actually asked in a very left leaning YT chat yesterday…
Noone replied.
Guess I’m a pariah there, too.
One of the interesting stats I heard on BBC was that there are something like 5 million extra graduates in the US population since Trump first came to office 4 years ago. I mean, that sounds like a huge success story so…way to go Trump!
Only, graduates are more likely to vote Democrat than they are Republican (oops, hehe) so the point they were making was that the shift in demographics within the US (and it is a trend that is continuing) counts against the Republicans (so they will have to slightly reinvent themselves if they want to have a shot at the Presidency in years to come).
