Diogo JOTA: 2020/21

Jota in 2019/20: 16 goals and six assists in 48 games (3060 mins). Nine of those goals came from Europa League and EL Qualifying games.

Jota in 2020/21: 12 goals and one assist in 22 games (1270 mins).

Klopp knows what he needs. Edwards gets what Klopp needs.

Edwards laughing at the world who said Werner was the goal scorer we needed.

Jotaā€™s the first forward on the teamsheet for me, including Salah.

The best finisher at the club by far on this seasonā€™s evidence. A completely ā€˜no-nonsenseā€™ forward, he gets in good positions, gets his shot off early and hits it hard towards the goal. Revolutionary stuff.

Heā€™s a consistent match winner. Top class.

I donā€™t like to think how bad our season may have been had we not signed him. The old front 3 look stale and predictable. Teams have worked out that Firmino is the key to our front 3 functioning effectively as a unit and heā€™s tracked relentessly now. Pushed further and further back to the halfway line and beyond. No oneā€™s worked out what to do with Jota yet. He has more licence to roam than he did at Wolves. We look so much more mobile and unpredictable with him in the attack and he is getting on the end of everything. Hopefully another example of a good player becoming a great player under Klopp.

We are laughing at the fools who whined when we didnā€™t sign Werner.

Jota is better in the air than our other attackers. He also has an extra bundle of energy, which is natural considering he hasnā€™t played high tempo football for last three seasons. But what really sets him apart is his hunger or singlemindedness. For his second goal last night, although the ball was barely a yard away from Mane, there wasnā€™t any tentativeness, all he saw was a loose ball and a gaping post.

Jota is also a poacher and itā€™s not something we have, he is more than that but he is a poacher and he isnā€™t afraid to hit it.

Mane was running through last night and for some reason squared it to Salah who was marked, Jota just hits that but not only can he hit it, he can place it.

Our most important signing since Alisson I reckon

That was a better header than I think its being given credit for. Thatā€™s a couple of time now, and I think one other time might have been against Arsenal as well, when he managed to get a ton of extra pace onto his header which was a big factor to it getting by the keeper.

Yup it was nice to see a header with power and not straight at the keeper.

Diogo is the perfect example of actual, affordable, and under the radar talent. There was barely any woo hoo even after we signed him. He is also the proof, if someone still needed any, of how much work our scouts, Edwards, our coaching staff and Klopp puts in.

Nice move for the goal last night, thought he made the difference (Gini also did well carrying the ball forward, thatā€™s what heā€™s good at, bringing it somewhere and giving it to more talented players). Martinez once said Messi is not only fast with the ball, but heā€™s fast at stopping with the ball. The way he suddenly slowed down and took a brave touch inside, that was the difference for me. Threw a few of their players off balance. With Mane struggling with form (losing some balls/duels when he naturally comes inside more, even if he remains very dangerous on the outside and inside), Iā€™d like to see more position changes during games between Jota and Mane when itā€™s a front 3 and maybe even Mane on the right when we play the 4-2-3-1.

Any idea on his goal returns when starting the game and when coming from bench? I do recollect even before his injury, he was way more impactful (in terms of goals returns purely) when coming off the bench than when he started a game. Heā€™s still more of a threat than Bobby and Mane currently from an overall game perspective mind.

To be honest I still see the same player if he starts it or comes off the bench, he isnā€™t like Origi or others who seems to be chalk and cheese.

The guys up at it, itā€™s just for some reason our first halfā€™s at Anfield have produced no goals in about 4 months.

Was completely lost on the left side. Didnā€™t understood why he had to play there.

Not a good performance today.

It was refreshing to see us try something new though, more generally speaking of our tactics. In a 4-2-3-1 on paper, we all guessed it would be Salah up top.

But we went with Bobby and Jota as two 10ā€™s or two combining second strikers in front of our duple pivot. Makes sense in possession, as we have to drag people out of their block and keep passing between the lines. Off the ball, they sat and blocked passes to their duple pivot of Shelvey and Longstaff.

But Jota, the more I watch him and I donā€™t mean to diminish him, he also seems to me as more of a clever/hard working/versatile player than technically brilliant. Some really crap touches today it must be said (Bobby also had some bad ā€œsimpleā€ passes, though better than Jota in trying through balls and links around the box).

His passing let him down today. But he still has a knack of wriggling into good positions. Had about four good opportunities today.

Unfortunately, he has also picked up the 2021 curse of scuffing his shots since he came from from his latest layoff.

At least he actually tries them.

He has been pretty docile in last few games.
