But, but, but. That spoils a nice digestible stat to beat him with.
The criticism of Jota is unfair, he’s missed a lot of games through injury and is probably still getting up to speed. When he scored last night, he didn’t really celebrate, which is likely a sign of his own frustration with his patchy form, since returning to the side. Jota is an important player for us when fit and I’d hate to see him leave.
2 goals and 8 assists in 20 this season.
Jota is not dead.
Understandable for a player that’s had a few lengthy lay offs.
Whether he’s here next season or not I’m sure he’ll have a better time of things than the last year has had for him.
I hope he is, because the last thing we need now is to open another position where we need to buy. Our attack is far from settled who plays how much, who responds to our needs in all phases of the game and with whom. I don’t care who comes out as the best trio, up to them to fight for game time. The 5 should be good for next season, the rest we’ll see when we come towards the summer of 2024.
I’d be happy enough with him staying or being sold if we could fetch 50-60m for him, we need to break out the habit of inactivity and resting on the players we have for time on end…the only time we seem to actually do anything is reacting to when we sell players and left forward is the 1 area of the field where you’d say we do have more options than anywhere else.
Don’t see anyone offering something like that for him, especially after the season he’s had. It’s easy now to say Jota is the last forward in the pecking order, yet we have brand new expensive ones who haven’t won their best position in our team yet. Nothing to say here, if something comes in of course we look at it. But 5 forwards should be exactly what we need and then next season we assess it again and see what we have to do.
Discussions about him being sold…yeah not for me. Bobby’s off, leaving us four top forwards - that’s bare minimum.
Things change very quickly in footy - after 3-4 games we may be talking about an un-droppable player, who’s ahead of the rest.
He looked good last night, he also needs game time to get back up to speed.
I assume that’s what Klopp will use time for.
Definitely a good player and we should keep. (Obviously everyone has a price, but I doubt there will be interest enough in him to exceed our need for him, so he will stay). Lovely to see him score two goals.
With all that said, it’s hard to see him higher than fifth in the pecking order. That doesn’t mean he won’t see plenty of action, as with form and fitness it can all change quickly.
Depends what Díaz returns like and also how Gakpo develops, I would say he is still ahead of Gakpo.
And Klopp evidently sees him as 3rd currently.
The pecking order of a lot of fans currently has Nunez higher than Klopp has him. And not even in the same position. So we’ll see. Pre-season and start of next season will give us answers. Right now it’s very hard to tell what will our best attacking combination be next season.
A team of our ambitions needs at least 5 top quality strikers, and Jota is an ideal option to have.
I wouldn’t dream of letting him go unless a significant upgrade became available, and there are very few who would fit into that bracket.
I would say of the 5 strikers I would expect bar Salah they will be rotated but even Salah May.
If we make one of the European competitions it will be vital to have 5 especially with our injury record one will be out at anyone time
I wouldn’t want to send anyone who started a game the previous weekend away especially in the conference league. So that’s where squad plays in but even if we somehow made it back in the CL then we will need players who can play at that high level and this lad can.
As long as he is happy we keep him.
There’s a sensible discussion to be had about selling most of our players if the price is right. We don’t have owners who can sell a few barrels of oil and fund a massive spending spree, we have to raise funds somehow.
The rumoured price that sparked the discussion the other week was between 60-70 million quid (might not be realistic, but that is another discussion). At that price, there are reasonable arguments to be made. He isn’t one of our very best players and his fitness is patchy, it really is not an outrageous debate to have.
That said, I’d prefer if he stayed. He puts in a shift defensively and has started adding a creative side to his game. Good signs last night after a dreadful first 30 minutes.
Jota was at Wolves for just two seasons where he managed 9356 mins
Jota is with us for three seasons and he has managed just 6350 mins
He hasn’t regressed or stagnated. One goal contribution in every 135 mins in Premier League is very decent. He is facing just too many speed-bumps on the way.
The game looked easier for everyone after the first goal, but it was maybe relevant that for Jota specifically things picked up after the second goal (one he created by winning the ball back in our own half). An under appreciated aspect of pressing like this is that if the game isnt going your way and you’ve had some bad touches it gives you the opportunity to make something positive happen that you can build on.
Seems to have built on that.
Four goals in two games, firecracker
Jota has equalled Antony and Sancho’s goal tally for the season, in 1 Week.
