Post-Real he told Carragher that his favourite midfield role is deeper than #10.
I would be interested what he would’ve said when he just joined us, when he went from being mainly a right sided #10 in Leipzig’s 4-2-2-2 to being a RCM #8 in Klopp’s 4-3-3.
At the time, that seemed like a jump. Then, he became a single #10 in Slot’s 4-2-3-1. But already last season, Slot said that Szobo told him he prefers playing deeper than that.
So long term, he sees himself challenging the Gravenberch and Mac. Unless we change the midfield shape on a regular basis.
You definitely need more than 11 quality players, but this is something that will be interesting to follow over the next weeks, months and years.
Also, it will be time for the club to decide who gets offered new contracts (and in which priority). Gravenberch, Mac and Szobo are all tied to 2028.
And just as I said that, Romano is reporting that we are in new contract talks with Gravenberch and Szobo. Early stages with Gravenberch and a bit more advanced with Szobo.
I’ve been thinking that for a while. In fact, I think the responsibility of captaincy has been affecting Virg’s performances. That’s a really delicate conversation to have, but I think it could be in everyone’s interests.
Complete overreaction that would totally destroy Virgil’s confidence. He really doesn’t deserve that. Of course, he’s struggling this season, like many others. However, I have a bit more understanding for him, as he must be incredibly frustrated for months as the leader of the defense, with Konate and Kerkez alongside him. Let’s be honest, Slot would never drop Virgil; that would put a huge strain on the Dutch national team as well, and of course, there’s a Dutch connection there. Perhaps that will be a task for our new coach at some point.
Let’s just let Szobo do his thing and continue to deliver great performances. His time will undoubtedly come.
I’d counternence selling Virg if we could bring in 2 very strong replacements. If he’s boxing himself into a corner re ‘needing Mo at his side’ then he may not be what we need in the dressing room anymore and may not be manageable without a Jurgenesque-jedi-charisma boss.
