OK, another update. Added Curtis Jones, Aurelian Tchouameni, Bruno Fernandes, Kevin de Bruyne, and Nicollo Barella.

As we have so many players in the mix now I’ve added more categories for the bottom of the table. Formula is now (Greenx3 + Yellowx2 + Blue) - (VeryVeryRedx3 + VeryRedx2 + Red) = Overall Score.

Full table is still here so you can see the individual categories… Szoboszlai - Google Tabellen

  • De Bruyne comes in at number 1 curtosy of more category wins than Bellingham who finishes on the same points.
  • There is a big gap but Szoboszlai comes in 4th overall with Mac Alllister 6th and split only by Fernandes.
  • Kone finishes bottom mostly because of his lack of attacking output losing him lots of points.
  • Mason Mount is the only player not to feature in the top 3 in any category, but was in the bottom three eleven times.
  • Jones score lowered by his dispossessed rate and for for having the worst ‘tackled’ rate on his dribbles.

After the Bellingham news we’ve been linked to a good 8 or 9 midfielders consistently. Fortunately, it looks like we’re signing a better player than all of them (Barella in the conversation though).

Mac Allister and Szoboslai is about as good as it gets from the list of players we’ve been teased with this summer. Good work from the club if this gets announced.

@Sweeting PPA = Progressive Passes Attempted?

#6’s like Kone , Rice , Tchouameni shouldn’t probably be counted as the requirements for them are different from the expectations of #8’s and 10’s. I daresay , Henderson’s a #6 now as well.

Yes you have to add that kind of context to the numbers but I don’t want to leave them out. I think it’s impressive that Tchouameni and Barella get into positive numbers on this because of their focus being primarily defensive - which doesn’t score as many points with the available statistical data.

I take mainly two things from your comparisons (which I love, by the way, and I know I’m speaking for whole of TAN):

  1. Real Madrid are going to have an otherworldly midfield - again.
  2. Klopp and co. are trying to make Liverpool larger than the sum of their parts by buying much improved parts.

I like the second point better.

What doesn’t need context though is that Mason Mount is absolutely fucking terrible.

I’d look at it in another way , whether Macallister and Szoboszlai’s weaknesses are cancelled when they play together. Both have really very few weaknesses from the looks of it. Are there any common weaknesses ?

And say we have a midfield of Macallister Hendo Szoboszlai , how would that pan out in terms of the three of them complementing each other ?

Not really. Szoboszlai’s main weakness is aerial ability, which Mac Allister actually scores quite well in. Mac Allister’s main weakness is Goal Creating Actions and Progressive Passes. PP is likely down to his starting position being further forward (so it’s hard to be progressive with a pass when you’re already very advanced) and Goal Creating Actions are countered by having a decent Shot Creating Actions score - suggesting that he was playing with players at Brighton that couldn’t hit a barn door with a shotgun… Welbeck.

Mac Allister isn’t a stand out in any category really but his wekanesses could very easily be explained by his role and teammates. I think he’s a very solid all arounder - which is why I think he plays the LCM role and not LAM.

@Sweeting You may have already said and I missed it, but did Mount’s stats come from last season (which was a bad one for him), or from a previous season where the perception of him was that he was doing quite well?

A point out of the blue worth raising - he allegedly already speaks really good english

Hm, don’t know what to expect.
When we signed Keita from Leipzig I thought what a player we’ve got.
Imo it didn’t pan out.
I hope Szoboszlai fits the bill.

Bold statement.

Mount’s stats are from 22/23. The only players not from this season are Keita and Ox because they didn’t play enough to be statistically relevant. Gravenberch also wouldn’t have qualified but they don’t have advanced stats for the Dutch league in 21/22 so I had to use his Bayern Munich numbers.

Only due to his durability. His quality was never in doubt.

PPA = Piss Poor Attempts

One thing I noticed from the video clips… Not sure I have ever seen a footballer receive the ball in the one instant, and be able to release it in a flash with the perfect pass when he decides to… The defenders won’t know whether to try and get near him to mark him, or stand off him
