Drill Baby Drill...the US Politics Thread (Part 3)

There is a real hubris in America about the supposed superiority of its system of government. The typical view is that it is newer and so had the opportunities to learn from the mistakes of others (ignoring all the 20th century constitutions across europe and the world) and so inherently better to the point of not questioning it. The Founding Fathers were like Moses bringing the commandments down from on high

But this was a group of men who understood that the system of government they created was not suited to an environment in which political parties existed and then watched as parties came to dominate out politics within about 15 years. It is a system that no longer fits our reality but we have a culture that refuses to even question anything about it.

“We intend to use the threat of government retribution to ensure that media companies toe the government line”. This is wild the level of comfort they have saying very unambiguously the things they are now saying (they said it before the election but for some reason people wanted to believe they couldnt possibly mean the things they clearly were saying)

It was always an invention, but this is what they spent years complaining that the left did to them. You should not see this as hypocrisy. You should see it as a reflection of the driving attitude of the right - if we do it then it cannot be wrong, and if you do it it cannot be right. That’s not really hyopcrisy because they thing they are complaining about is never really the thing they have issue with.

When they get angry about what they perceive as the left’s calllous response to Kirk’s death they arent upset because “celebrating violence is wrong”. They are upset simply because the rule is being violated that you cannot say bad things about one of their people. If the person involved wasnt one of theirs they wouldnt give a shit, and if it was someone they didnt like they’d be fine with celebrating it themselves.

It’s quite typical of how the Right Wing in the US thinks now.

This is kind of thing is one reason why I am making a real effort to disengage - any American cultural product is now the output of a process curated to be acceptable to these forces. That alone should make one question the content one is consuming

This is still fucked but a bit more complicated.

ABC doesn’t own the stations it is broadcast on. They license with local broadcasters and some of those have become big enough to be cause problems. This Kimmel move came from two of the bigger ones, one a far right company that has been slowly propagandizing local news for 15 years, and another that is currently working through a merger and so needs to pay tribute to the fcc to get that approved

Don’t they talk in this fashion on purpose so IA can’t get a handle on how to replicate them, and then go on to predict what they are actually thinking..!
I’ve noted a few articles, where people are beginning to throw in random, totally obscure sentences within their writings, to throw IA off their scent, so to speak :person_shrugging:

Yes. Being saying this for a while but anyone in the US who can get out, get out. The country won’t recover until there has been massive upheaval and the right has thoroughly discredited which will probably mean unofficial civil war.

I have wondered how far it goes before it boils over and what that trigger will be. I’m too disconnected to have any idea to be honest.

Despite how bad things are, the average American is too comfortable with their lives to be willing to give it up imo. Maybe if they’re starving in the streets things may change.
For the time being there will just be more trampling on rights and the occasional assassination.

Just seen what Kimmel said, and it’s absolutely true. Cancelling him for that is pure oppression. The constitution is in shreds.
