Drill Baby Drill...the US Politics Thread (Part 3)

Genuine question, but how many people see this an immediately know this isnt just a skull and crossbones, but that this specific symbol was used by the Nazis?

I have to say I did not, and I’d consider myself fairly well read on the broader topic and so I’ve been surprised by the number of people claiming that he should have known that this was the specific image Himler had on his hat and what that meant.

I am trying to figure out if this is one of those things where twitter is doing the “today I learned something new and am going to pretend that I have always known this and everyone else is an idiot for not knowing it” thing, or I am just genuinely poorly informed.

Law and order. National security

Trump just pardoned the Binance guy. This is not only a brazen act of self dealing and corruption given the business backing Zhao has been giving the Trump crypto businesses, but this is what his company was caught doing and what he had been charged with

A really interesting discussion here with the guy who was the top diplomat to Venezuela during the first Trump administration. Fascinating stuff , plus I discovered a country I never even knew existed ; Aruba anyone ?

“What Trump’s Venezuelan Strategy Is Really About.”

I think it is quite well known in Europe and that everyone in Germany, that grew up in Germany, knows it.

You are extremely clearly, not poorly informed in general, but I admit it’s a slight surprise for me to learn that you didn’t know that this is the SS Totenkopf. It’s on most pictures of German regalia from the Second World War, at least if the SS is involved. I probably knew this below the age of 12, but I was very interested in the Second World War as a child.

But it depends on your interests in life. I would say that if you have an interest in history, you should probably have known. But if you don’t, then shrug.

Hardly any shame in not knowing everything. You know so much I don’t.

In any case, moving through life, everyone, even highly informed people, will have more than a few “Oh, I should have really known this” moments. We all do.

Every SS used this btw, including the Muslim contigents in the Waffen SS

So this was used by both the Allgemeine SS, military wing Waffen SS and Totenkopfverbande SS

It was also used by the dreaded Gestapo. But the difference between Gestapo and the SS is…so-so since Heinrich Himmler was also Reichsführer SS and it became a satelite under the command of the SS.

Himmler had many hats (also in charge of regular order police), as had Reinhart Heydrich

Gestapo:

Gestapo officers were also SS but had a lot of officers that were not SS, so might be a bit confusing for many (but it’s a subsidary of it)

Really interesting piece in Harpers here about Trust in media

Newspapers became more accountable for telling us the truth and people responded negatively to it

Holy fuck. A government of children. And fucking stupid ones at that

They updated the Whitehouse website to defend these renovations and made some additional changes in the timeline of historic events section. See which ones you think they recently added…

Seems significant in concert with what I posted yesterday

I think the the photo of the handcuffed unshaved guy in a bath is a perfect addition to the White House website

They might, just as a public relations service, of course.

Am I the only one who thinks that it sounds extremely silly when someone in an official and high position , uses slang such as “the land” to indicate inserting troops on land. “The land is gonna be next”. I may have problems with writing gramatically correct, but these people cannot talk.

This is the first time that expression has ever been used. Trump speaks (and writes) English as if it’s a foreign language. He uses words and phrases translated from his own mother tongue, commonly known as ‘Gobbledygook’.

I was in Aruba on holiday a few years ago, beautiful island, Dutch heritage. Beaches and seafood were amazing. Unfortunately I got covid and I couldn’t fly back home to the States until I got the all clear. My wife left to go home - work and kids, while I was placed in ‘Covid jail.’

People assume it must be lovely to be ‘stranded’ on an idyllic isle for an extra week, but they take you to the interior, away from the beaches and touristy places. I was housed in an apartment by myself and basically spent a week not feeling too bad from covid, getting a sun tan, watching Netflix and having food delivered.

It wasn’t too bad in the end.

Don’t be too sure it’s the first. I certainly remember hearing him say “the nuclear” more than once.

Also likely that the government will be shut down for quite a while, since that is what the Project 2025 guys wanted.
