Drill Baby Drill...the US Politics Thread (Part 3)

CBS interview Harris just before the election on their flagship news magazine, 60 Minutes. As is normal, they cut and edit the interview to make for better TV but release the transcript of the full interview. Trump sues them for this and they, shockingly, settle rather than take on a vengeful now president

Last night Trump went on 60 minutes. There was a portion of the interview where we went on a tirade about him having sued them and “won”, and how their new management is much better. That did not make the televised cut

EDIT What did air though was absolutely unhinged. The man who has attacked the last president for not knowing what was going on responded to questions about his recent pardoning of the Binance guy by denying knowledge of the guy or situation.

There is a lot about this political era that confounds me, but probably nothing more than the universal knowledge that cancel culture is a LW phenomenon given the right absolutely fucking lives for it

Also note, of course these Halloween costumes had absolutely nothing to do with Kirk and anyone who organically made the connection or didnt immediately identify it as nonsense when they saw it circling on the right wing is utterly insane.

what are they refering to then?

at the very least its a bit of a convinient oversight…no?

I think you underestimate how much the Right Wing info sphere talks about the violence against Christians. The oil angle is a traditional Marxist angle, but in this case with Trump, he lives in an info-sphere where the violence against Christians are greatly exaggerated and the violence against others, greatly underreported.
There is no indication that the US wants to invade. None (threatening with military action isn’t the same as preparing an invasion). This is gunboat diplomacy regarding a select few issues that resonates in the Info-Sphere.

I’m not fully aware, but how involved in Africa is China? Just half wondering if America wants to stick its beak in not just for the stated reason of violence against Christians, but also for the upper, unspoken reason of wielding some sort of control and keeping its main rival in check?

China has massively increased its presence in Africa, in part stepping into a vacuum left by the West’s reduction in aid. Huge infrastructure projects through tied aid can be found all over the continent, a couple of major railroads in East Africa for example. Formally, it is called the Belt and Road initiative. In Nigeria, there is a major hydro plant, a railroad, and a massive expansion of a port - something like $20 billion in the past 5 years or so. Trump is treading into far more dangerous ground than he realizes.

This is about propping up, or forcing the governments in the disintegrating Sahel, to combat groups such as JNIM and Boko Haram more seriously.

That is what this is about people. It’s not about some colonial war. You need to read about the geopolitical background of an area, the security issues there, before speculating. All of these countries are linked, like dominos.

My point above is that what is happening in Sudan is way worse in terms of violence. But the entire Sahel has unraveled and ISIS and Al Qaida are rampant now.

The issue is French withdrawal, Russian and Chinese dominance and collapsing state structure.

But Sudan and Ethiopia-Eritrea seems an even bigger problem right now. The fact is that the entire Sahel and areas bordering the Sahel, has gone up in flames. State structure is gone. You have Mali, you have Burkina Fasa. Propped up by Russia, but losing territory to Al Qaida and unraveling after the French withdrawal. Nigeria is next door to all of this and African borders are famously porous, with everyone and their dog, fighting in one country, while having a base in the next one. It’s connected, all of this. And in this power vacume, violence against Christians is indeed a great problem. But I would rather prioritise the horrors in Sudan asap.

That’s what I was getting at, without knowing the details. Cheers for providing the info, your knowledge is a great asset to the forum.

The Chinese presence is what everyone. EVERYONE. Everyone warned about and pointed to. But they shut down US Aid anyway. Everything that man does backfires.

It was a growing concern before Trump 1.0, and accelerated 2016-2020. Trump 2.0’s shutdown of USAID is basically throwing in the towel on a fight that was already fairly close.

What is an oversight? What are you actually claiming here?

What the hell is this:

We have had enough of being the police man of the world !!!

In reality, this is likely just striking Kaitab Hezbollah in response to attacks on US forces in the region, which Biden did all the time. But Hegseth is being so melodramatic, that it sounds as if it’s something huge

It’s a pain, my typos. I apologice, I know many find it irritating. But I hope most finds it amusing or just shrug from it instead.
I am not very good at spotting them as I write. I often edit posts when I see them, but I don’t always read again what I have posted in time.

Often, it is just missing or additional "a"s or "d"s due to my slow keys, but sometimes it is far worse than that to put it mildly.

But I comfort myself in the knowledge that everyone should be able to understand if they care to try.

No its me. My posts are terrible (almost legendary) for clumsy typing and this is one of very few on your part. I’m yet again guilty of not reading things properly.

I’ll admit I did have to read it 3 times though. Things, once seen cannot be unseen type of thing.

Exactly, that and threatening oil supplying countries suggests he has no idea of what he is doing, unless starting wars everywhere is his aim!

Disgusting behaviour

The right are opposed to progress. They don’t try to win arguments for maintaining the status quo on their merits but by undercutting the arguments of calls for progress, often even the perceived credibility of the people making those calls.

Nigeria is just one of those arguments they throw into the air to dismiss pro-Palestine cries - “oh you care about humanitarian causes but where are you on [insert separate conflict with less attention]?” It’s a variation of the “Oh climate change is a problem, but you have an iPhone? Hypocrite much?…I’m a smart boy”

What they normally do is throw enough whataboutisms into the air hoping someone with a platform associated with the left takes is seriously (it’ll be Bill Maher. It’s always Bill Maher) allowing it break containment and get into general discourse and distract people for just enough for the pressure to do anything to subside.

What the right hasn’t quite worked out yet is their president is a moron and responds to these things like they are serious policy propositions and one day soon he’s going to forget to lose interest in one of these fake crusades and…that’s how we got into a holy war in east Africa

You can buy the t shirt on Amazon and they have reviews for that design going back to at least 2024.

Does Mike Johnson know anything?

Whenever I see this asshole, he’s saying he doesn’t know or he’s not aware or he wasn’t informed.

What’s the point of him?
