A good essay here from Ben Rhodes who co-hosts Pod Save The World with Tommy Vietor.
He explores the shameful behaviour of the Biden administration post-Oct 7 and just how out of step it left them with their own voters. If Mamdaniâs victory in NY tells them anything , itâs that itâs no longer shameful , or a political liability , to be openly critical of Israel.
"Because of its actions, Israel is profoundly isolated, and it will only become more so if the status quo holds. Instead of empowering the Israeli right by capitulating to its actions, Democrats should be a source of solidarity for Israelis who want a genuine alternative to Mr. Netanyahu and his coalition. That requires a willingness to use leverage, not a promise to relinquish it.
The Trump administrationâs relentless claims that Israelâs critics are antisemitic also obscures the danger posed by the ascent of right-wing ethnonationalists across the West. If you believe a 19-year-old Jewish college student chanting âFree Palestineâ is more dangerous than the vice president of the United States implying that Germans should embrace the far-right party Alternative for Germany, then youâre drawing the wrong lessons from history.
Some political support may be lost if Democrats distance themselves from Israel, particularly among donors. But Democrats can make clear that they are willing to support a future Israeli government if it aligns its policies with humane and democratic policies."

The biggest disappointment of the Biden admin, other than it ushering in a return of Trump, is that it was being staffed in a way that looked at the outset that it was going to change course on key areas of foreign policy. Almost all of his senior roles he filled with people who had been senior enough in similar roles in the Obama white house to have experienced first hand that what the âthe blobâ demands is often not good for foreign policy goals and rarely good even for domestic politics. If you were listening to Ben and Tommy back then they were really hopeful that based on the conversations theyâd had with pretty much all of these people in the intervening years that they were going back with the intention of charting a new course. Shit like the âhug Bibi strategyâ being consigned to the bin on day 1. It didnt work out anything at all like that, and Blinken and Sulliven will now hopefully be stained for life
Iâd love to hear Ben and Tommy address that some time but it probably hits too close to home for them to do it
