Drill Baby Drill...the US Politics Thread (Part 3)

The ponce formerly known as prince seems to have been particularly dim witted and wasn’t clever about covering his tracks. Trump, Clinton and others are much slicker operators and were better at hiding their crimes.

It’s kind of got lost in all the insanity that followed but if there was a theme of the 2016 election it was that something about the economy was broken, but in ways that was not showing up in the standard metrics experts use to judge the economy’s performance. The economy was strong but people felt otherwise hence the populist support for Trump and the strength of Bernie’s campaign. Yet here we are 10 years later and not only have we really made no progress on finding better ways to describe and measure that, you have things like this coming from the administration of the populist champion

THAT IS NOT HOW GDP WORKS

This chart would suggest the disconnect only began in 2020 with the pandemic, but it was clear a sizeable portion of the population felt it even before then

The US billed the measures as a response to people and organisations that have campaigned for restrictions on American tech firms, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio saying they belonged to a “global censorship-industrial complex”.

He said: “President Trump has been clear that his America First foreign policy rejects violations of American sovereignty. Extraterritorial overreach by foreign censors targeting American speech is no exception.”

*Does this dumbfuck even understand the term he tries to bastardize (and fail miserably)?

The irony of complaining of extraterritorial overreach when it comes to social media companies :man_facepalming:t2:*

Like with most of those Maga loudmouths it’s just verbiage , and once you actually disect what they are saying , it turns out to be utter nonsense , or the exact opposite of what it is they think they are saying.

Dennis Radtke, an MEP and member of the German ruling CDU, said: “The Trump fans in Europe defend this as a fight for freedom of speech. Where exactly has an opinion been suppressed? Where is the fight for freedom of speech with regard to China and Russia? It’s only about business here and the fight against the rule of law.”

Raphaël Glucksmann, a French socialist MEP, said in a message to Rubio: “For far too long, Europe has been weak in implementing its own laws and defending its own interests. You have chosen to cosy up tyrants and confront democracies. The time has come for us to stand up. Kneel as much as you want in front of Putin, we are the free world now.

“We are not a colony of the United States. We are Europeans, we must defend our laws, our principles, our interests. This scandalous sanction against Thierry Breton pays tribute to his fight for our sovereignty. We will continue it together. To the end.”

I know nothing about the nuts and bolts of social media, I’m sure someone far more technologically literate can help…

What chance would a European-owned social media platform have? I guess it depends on enough people giving enough of a shit…

It’s all about uptake. How many people will use it?

I suspect a lot will and it will also weed out the hundreds and thousands of bots that are there just to make content-based money.

I’m longing for the day when Trump and the Republicans get voted out of power,

for the day when the Democrats or somebody sensible gains power and reveals the mess that Trump made of the USA and the world,

somebody coming in and having to undo everything he has destroyed

that’ll be the ultimate humiliation for Trump

I like to think that it’ll be the last we see of any Trump or his followers in power,

You’re giving the US electorate too much credit

And AIPAC and the Israel lobby too little credit

Well that’s pretty much it. Do you remember Friends Reunited? Huge (at least in Britain) to begin with. Eventually usurped and replaced by the likes of Facebook.

Social media is a bit like a Mexican Wave. No ones knows why they start, but you feel a bit of a tit not taking part once they are underway.

Yes, and despite all the shit that he serves up every day, Trump still has a 35% approval rating.

Trump could not have anyone around him that would make him look like a fuckwit…QED!

Fake news, from a failing broadcaster!

I’m not a failing broadcaster!

But you dont deny the fake news bit!

Sorry, can’t get a preview, but this is informative:

I guess that’s what I’m asking. What is the critical mass for a useful social media platform?
