But nothing.
Instead you have Democratic congressmen like Schumer just calling (blowing up NATO and annexing Greenland) “Foolhardy” (which doesn’t sound like it’s a crisis at all, certainly not 25th ammendment territory) and that pro Israel guy Fetterman seems to even like it:
They are just treating it like a slightly abnormal event and not a crisis. Evidence, if any of us needed it (most of us don’t), of the usefulness of US congressional Democrats when it comes to opposition to Trump.
If Trump is hellbound on getting Greenland by all means no one is going to stop him (except for, theoretically I guess, the US Congress?). In the end no one is going to war against the US over Greenland, let’s get real. The insanity of putting punitive tariffs on countries that don’t even have a say in who Greenland belongs to can’t be stretched enough. What exactly is even giving in here? France, Germany, UK etc are supposed to pressure Denmark into letting Orangeman buy Greenland or something? Or just publicly say, yeah we’re cool with it now, you can stop these tariffs now? Maybe someone can explain this to me, it’s all a bit too insane for me.
By rehearsing own and allies forces on Greenland, like the US recently have complained is not secure enough (despite there being no Russian or Chinese ships there, contrary to Trump’s claim), Denmark and allies called the American bluff. It was never about Greenland not being safe against Chinese and Russian incursion and US national security, like Washington claimed.
By calling the American bluff, the shit hit the fan and Spray Tan Caligula has been unmasked (sure, everyone knew what he looked like under the mask, but bear with me here). Spray Tan Caligula then lashes out, targeting and accusing Denmark and allies, over a military provocation against the US, by placing forces to train on Danish territory. Since US here is interested in an imperial land grab and not security, this makes a twisted sort of sense if you are a bit mad. Normal functioning leaders would just use different arguments obviously !
However, it is still a viable strategy to stand up to the US, just very costly. At this point, it is arguable far more costly not doing so.
That doesn’t mean that there will be war with the US over Greenland, as you say, not workable as that is. However, it means a clean cut break with the United States and finding other allies (hard).
All of this is so incredibly uncomfortable for us, because we have not enough Hard Power to punish the the US with Russia pressing at the same time.
Like Sverre Diesen said today (the previous commander of the Norwegian Army):
General Sverre Diesen, former Chief of Defence of Norway, stated what everyone knows but is afraid to say:
“Under this administration, we cannot consider America our ally. The United States is a hostile actor that, in the event of a conflict in Europe, is more likely to align with Russia than with us and other European countries.”
As for me, I doubt most people understand how serious this is at all, particularly for the next 20 years for us in Europe. Because the destruction of our Security Pact would indeed be terrible for us all (look at the EU, then imagine the EU being 100% united in the security realm in case of war; and yeah, I cannot imagine that either).
Cheers. I understand how we got here in Trump’s twisted logic. Still got to admit trying to coerce countries into doing something they actually have no say in is kinda insane.
All for standing up to the US. My views on it are even darker tbh, unless Trump and his cronies are somehow, some time stopped from inside the US.
Might be deemed crazy scenarios if I said them out loud here, but I’m not ruling out anything anymore. Most of what’s been going on would have been deemed crazy a few years ago.
Its time for europe to escalate things against Russia. For starters, ban Russian citizens from the country, confiscate all their assets and make it difficult for the Russian elites to exist outside of their own country. Thats the most effective no cost strategy for hurting Russia.
Because what they are doing requires the following: No shame, no scruples, no honour and naked ambition. You just have too much honour, as you would never contemplate attacking another innocent party to hurt another, but that is what the US is doing here.
By targeting Denmark’s closest friends with punitive tarriffs, Trump is making the situation excruciatingly difficult to navigate for Denmark. Denmark needs friends. If friends behind closed doors starts telling Denmark to let the US have Greenland, Denmark is in problems. And already, lots of voices in EUR is writing articles daily, informing people as to how worthless Greenland is and how important it is to be on the good side of the US.
If the goal is also the destruction of NATO, this could pave that road.
As for your dark fears, well, I have some serious too unfortunately. Not so afraid for myself, more what kind of EUR the next generation will see. Finlandization ? Maybe, who knows. So hard to predict the future today.
Weakness in front of predators does not work. I know it is a mantra, but weakness in front of imperialists really only invites attack and EUR handling of Trump (reacting, failing to work out a united strategy but trying to placate his ego only), invites at the very least abuse if not attack.
