There is some legitimate and serious conversation to be had about the implications of having trans rights. McBride is a good voice to have in this space, and progressives have perhaps erred in assuming people have been fine with the pace of change. Unfortunately the ability to process the issues adequately is way beyond the current political climate in America.
On the extreme right, there is a very un-American meanness and lack of empathy. Their approach has created a hell of a lot of fear among the trans community.
They are in power right now, but the extreme right does not have any answers for the trans community, and their approach will not hold sway with the American public for long.
At a time when there is very little left to sustain any hope , it seems there are still some believers left.
NYT columnist Thomas B. Edsall gets the low down from an assortment of law professors on why impeachment is still viable , if unlikely ; (Free to read.)
Splitting that into racial categories is crap imo. Its a deflection for whatever reason. The real issue is people being convinced by populist speil to an extent they will vote against their own interests. This is not unique to the US in any way.
Its relevant to the degree it goes against a common understanding of US politics. Demographics is Destiny, the idea that as young and non-white voters currently prefer Dems then as the country becomes younger and less white the Dems will develop a large advantage, is a dumb framework but it has been one that drives a lot of the conventional wisdom.
To a degree this is the press doing a story of āwhat we had previously told of how politics works is shown to be pathetically limited, this is how it actually worksā while still be pathetically limited in its understanding.
This is my Iraq WMD moment. I was skeptical of that story but now realize I didnt cover it with the vigor I should have. I vowed never to do that again. That is why I am looking backwards to relitigate an issue that was already covered extensively at the time while ignoring a modern day WMD lie intended to draw us into conflict in the middle east.
This is the Republican establishment that Trump built his political reputation for opposing on military conflict, yet here the story is that this is already the USā war rather than something Israel just want to do and need our help with, and Trump is going along with it just fine
And the large collection of people who argued that it was a strength of Trumpās that he managed to avoid military conflict in his first term, an argument that was not based on reality, will now flip on a dime and say this is a show of strength the US president needs to show.
Weāll probably get into a quagmire and Trump will walk away with his reputation for not being interested in foreign military entanglement intact.
Again, this was not just predictable but predicted. People who thought the Trump admin was interested in or capable of achieving their supposed immigration aims without this sort of racist collateral damage were fools or liars
There doesnāt seem to be much of a reason left for the Iranian regime not to use terrorist attacks on US soil now, which will in turn set up a logic for further domestic repression.
