India is extremely sensitive to the suggestion of Western brokerage (for obvious colonial reasons). Even when it has happened and been important, the parties at the time had the good sense to stay quiet about it in order to avoid introducing domestic complications for India. That would be less salient for Modi, as the BJP was the primary voice for those concerns, but still real.
