Most estimates are suggesting this set back the program by months. Even accepting some degree of political/ideological motivation wanting to portray this is an ineffective, compare even a far more positive analysis with the criticisms these hawks were airing about the JCPOA…it only set them back by 15 years. Yet they love this.

The Iranian response is very carefully calibrated so that the US can stand down if they wish. Iran claims victory. On another note, Israel has said the last 3 days that they will say yes to a cease fire.
The US may of course choose to escalate now, since it is Trump. But it could essentially be over now if various parties wish.

Pretty much. Devil’s advocate would argue that 1) Iran were on the best behavior in the short term and that didnt necessarily reflect how they would continue to act in the longer term once attention on the deal and their commitments waned, 2) we cannot believe those figures anyway.
I think there merit to both arguments, but even the Obama team acknowledged 1. Their point was you dont fix a decades long enmity with 1 deal and so the only way for the deal to work was with long term engagement that keeps the incentive on them behaving. But even with that limitation, the Trump approach has achieved worse outcomes.

I think Trump will stop now, because then he can declare victory. The Iranian retaliation was carefully calibrated to minimise the chance of loss of life on the American side, so there is no true need to respond.
Yes, but more knowledgable Iranians can see through this. But it still serves a purpose in their domestic propaganda and they do show some risk willingness launching even such a small attack. Some even believe regime propaganda fully.

Saw a notable observation. Israel and the US have been suggesting the 2015 deal was weak and Iran was cheating using secret sites - yet despite massive intel penetration that Israel has been crowing about, they have not hit any sites not previously known to IAEA
