5 years ago during the worst of the Covid outbreak, religious institutions went to court for the right to be excluded from public safety measures baring congregation such is the importance to their flock of attending.
Today the church now says attending mass is too dangerous so maybe lets knock it on the head for a little bit until ICE calms down
Seems a sensible move. Lots of people are living in fear of ICE, and it won’t be long before their henchmen are lying in wait outside of places of worship that the Hispanic community gravitates toward.
The COVID stuff was mistaken, but I’m glad the Catholic Church is able to be pragmatic now. My own church followed the guidance of the State on public gatherings, even though Indiana had a religious exemption. Services were shut down for a while, then when they resumed it was with social distancing and masks as recommended. In addition, the church added online services and encouraged people - especially those who were more vulnerable, to stay connected that way.
It all seemed reasonable enough, although there were some loons, especially early on, who wanted to pretend COVID wasn’t a big deal.
This is a throw away comment but is actually impeachable. It is a straight out admission that he is setting foreign policy based on what he sees as good for himself and his relationships with other leaders
Sure, it’s trump and nothing that comes out of his mouth is serious. But when the president says something it should matter and it is a terrible thing for our country and the world when the president is enabled to say wild stupid shit that everyone assumes is not serious or not what he means. This is how you go from bombing Iran despite having a meeting scheduled for a couple of days later to discuss diplomatic alternatives to hostilities.
Trump spends our country’s future capital with these sorts of bullshit statements and that starts with him not being viewed as accountable for anything that comes out of his mouth.
It is interesting what generates coverage and outrage. Honestly, drug possession and driving without a licence are exactly the sort of easily avoidable charges were made clear to us when coming here on a visa that would threaten your status. I get he has a greencard rather than the non-immigrant status of a only having a visa, but it’s not THAT dissimilar…we are still told very clearly that revocation is a possible consequence of criminal complaints.
I guess there is a leopard eating his face element to the story, but its the deputized thugs kidnapping people off the street without clear IDs or warrants and just racially profiling people. It’s the revocation of TPS status, affecting entire classes of people for things unrelated to their conduct while present here. Those are the things that seem more important to me.
The distrust of journalists common among Americans has rarely been applied to local journalists in the same way. There was more of a connection between people and the local journo in terms of the things they covered. This stat maybe says something about the source of the loss of trust in journalism we’ve seen over the past couple of decades as local news sources either disappeared or increasingly took on a national perspective because they didnt have the people to create their own content about local stories
