That was awful to see yesterday…

So glad he’s alive. Could be serious consequences still, but the main thing is that he’s still with his family and loved ones.

Stay strong, Christian. :crossed_fingers:t4:

Eriksen only started 17 games in Serie A last season though so overplaying doesn’t really apply in his case. I suspect there is a medical reason for his collapse unrelated to the sport.

Players having to play in lots of games is nothing new. Liverpool used to play just as many games in the 60s and 70s with largely the same 11 starting each game. I remember the same Liverpool side playing 3 league games in 4 days over Easter 1963. Yes the game was slower but those games were on heavy muddy pitches with a heavy leather ball and crunching tackles.

I suspect surviving players from those days think the modern player has it comparatively easy with large squads and all the support they get.

Very probably it seems in this case, because 17 games is not a lot. Maybe COVID or COVID vaccine related issues. Doesn’t negate my general point though.

No, he did not have COVID or a vaccination according to the Inter team doctor.

Thanks for the update

I get what you are saying. But I don’t think football isn’t sustainable anymore and it’s only a matter of time before something really bad happens. Thing is, it’s very unlikely that there will be significant changes even if something really bad happens.

It was also played at walking pace, with far less athletic demand on the body.

Former Denmark goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has told BBC Radio 5 Live that it was “absolutely ridiculous” that the game between Denmark and Finland carried on after Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch.

“That would be the worst two hours in my time in football,” said Schmeichel.

"Something terrible like that happens and Uefa gives the players an option to go out and play the game or come back at 12:00 today. What kind of option is that?

"It’s a ridiculous decision by Uefa. They should have tried to work out a different scenario and shown a little bit of compassion, and they didn’t.

Schmeichel is right and has every right to say this, but we will never know if he would have been as upfront after a Danish win. Let’s hope so.

The over-exploitation of workers is nothing new and is prevalent around the world in all forms of employment. Employers will squeeze every last drop out of their employees until they are either too sick to work, or rise up in revolt. Only when an incident like this is clearly linked to the schedule will the authorities be forced to reconsider.

I’m just so relieved after what happened Eriksen is improving. it was horrendous to see.

Wait, this is not the first time a footballer had collapsed and even died on field. So to now suddenly say that the fixtures or congestions are causing it is not right.

Of course, piling on more fixtures onto an already congested season is not right but for football to now suddenly realized it is to be blame for all these collapse and deaths…

There are plenty of exploitations in other industries which are far worse or even football in not so rich leagues but for football especially in these parts of the world, I would be on the side of these are exceptions that need to be managed medically individually and as a group, procedurally and processes.

For Eriksen, its always so distressful when you see a person just collapsed like that, helpless and life could just dissipate like that. Glad he seems ok now, career wise, this might spell the end as a player but I think for him and his family, I think its just great he is alive. Hope the best for him!

Kjaer was linked to us lots when we had Aggar especially, so big respect for the kudos he is getting. A real humanitarian that lad.

As a ‘cynical old git’, my fitst thoughts were that Schmeichel’s comments were just trying to take focus of Kasper’s blunder.

I’m not saying he’s not right, but I do wonder about his motivation.

Problem is it seems the players decided.

Was it right? Probably not and if it was that or tomorrow then I’d agree with Peter a bit.

However I’m not totally convinced that Finland wouldn’t have accepted a point if UEFA had turned around and said. If Eriksen hadn’t gone to the hospital awake and hadn’t been ok then I don’t think the game would have gone ahead and maybe the Russian match would have gone too.

No one had a choice really. Not even UEFA. I get all the emotional criticism, but if the game was to ever be played, it had to be yesterday or today (because of recuperation between games, there wasn’t more space as far as I understand, to set up the game at a later date). It was just an awful situation. But when he, thankfully, survived, you can’t cancel the tournament because of that awful incident.

Not about cancelling a tournament, if he had passed away I can’t see the game going ahead in Russia and it wouldn’t surprise me if they hadn’t declared the Denmark game.

I doubt Denmark would have gone on a pitch today if Eriksen was fighting for his life or had passed away.

They do uniquely for this tournament have three rest days between rounds, which is not often the case between Groups/Last 16

Oh yes, undoubtedly. If he had passed away, no way the game had been played. That’s an entirely different and far more awful scenario.

Labor is labor.

But the players didn’t have dieticians and all the other fitness related technology etc.

Sometimes, someone’s body gives out. Why does Covid affect some more than others?

Casillas had a heart attack. Is playing in goal a strain on the heart? I don’t know.

I do know player’ s bodies are like finely tuned cars. Capable of excellent performance but obviously they need constant maintenance.

I don’t disagree with the general point of players play too many games etc but I don’t hear the players saying let’s play less games and I’m happy to receive less pay either.
