Neither is Sterling. He has missed 8 penalties for City.

But he took them to a World Cup semifinal and now a euro final. Surely, that’s progress…

One bonus: No knighthood for the weak, media-friendly Southgate. Just saying.

Can I ask why you have warmed to Southgate.

Walker went off. I would have had no confidence in Sterling taking one, but would have thought either he or Grealish would have wanted the responsibility. Possibly Stones as well.

Both teams have Liverpool players. :grimacing:

Kindly view my recent post.

I think Southgate has his order predetermined, probably based upon performance in training. However consideration should be given to mental strength. To deal with penalties in real life.

Under a pressure situation I would much rather have Henderson, Sterling etc who have experienced pressure situations in club football. Than putting forward the youngsters.

To much is made about kids playing without fear. Thats true in the middle of a game when you dont have time to think. Its different when you are waiting, all eyes are on you, the stadium is silent.

The world Cup couldn’t have fallen any better to get to the semis. What people forget about that tournament we played 3 decent sides Belgium twice and Croatia and lost them all.

In that situation and under that pressure it’s less about the ability to take a pen than the ability to keep calm and keep your head. Even the better takers can miss, like Jorhinho. It is a bit of a lottery but putting a 19 up with hardly 2 seasons of top flight football in that position just ramps up the pressure on him.

We are getting too hung up on the penalties. What about the stat one shot on target in 120 minutes.

My… I wonder if how posters on here have turned on Southgate ( I actually don’t recall a negative comment on here about him over the last week but I want really looking for one) is reflected in wider society?

Sure the praise he’s received recently had been a little too much, but it’s also a little too much p to have the knives or after losing a finals on penalties. Was his tactics tonight spot on? Not even close. But even managers make mistakes.

He’s generally said the right things and has come across as likeable.

I don’t think he’s a good manager, and while he’ll be praised for getting England to the World Cup Semi and the Final of this, the niggle in the back of my mind is how the draws opened up for England, and how relatively easy their progress in both tournaments has been.

Anyway, they can win or lose the Qatar World Cup for all I care, cos I’m having absolutely nothing to do that that bloodbath, as should anyone with an ounce of humanity.

Southgate should never have put Saka through that position. Why didn’t he play Rashford earlier for 10-15 minutes at extra time?

Grealish and Sterling should have taken a pen each.

Congratulations Italy. You won by a whisker. You perfected your dark arts well, especially that twerp Jorginho and Chiellini pulling Saka’s shirt.

It’s a final. Italy completely dominated the second, as they would do being the IMO superior team.

I can think of three England kids who will definitely be playing with fear from now on.

I fucking hope Saka has balls the size of melons, cos it’s going to be fucking brutal from here.

In honest I just looked at Italy and the truly great opponents they knocked out were Belgium and Spain (are Swiss considered big these days?) England knocked out Germany.

Too early?

England should have won. Excellent start but for much of the game played well within themselves. Poor goal to concede and Italy didn’t offer much outside that. Terrible penalties in the end. That was there for the taking. Golden chance gone.
