Harvey Elliott was born in April 2003, Will Hughes in April 1995. Will Hughes had his first Premier League game at 22 and only 17 months before Elliott had his first game at 16. Will Hughes had a bit of hype when he was younger but has been a solid CM whose claim to fame has been playing for Watford. Elliott was targeted, bought and played for Liverpool before his 17th Birthday, and not just any Liverpool, the Liverpool with a widely acknowledged fantastic recruitment team that was recording over 90 points in the League and winning it that year after recording over 90 points and winning the CL the year before. I don’t think you can honestly say one is like the other. Closest comparison I can think of is Raheem Sterling but with a passionate love for LFC. Yes I’m all aboard the hype train
He’s a 29 year old who’s already not great and with an increasingly poor injury record who offers very little contribution when he is fit to play. At this point he’s only going to decline.
He’s blocking both a squad place for any potential foreign signings that we might want to bring in and also a development path for Elliott.
At his best he can give you a moment of brilliance, but for the most part he’s a fairly average player. In that respect similar to what Wilson offers.
Wouldn’t mind if he’s leaving. Yes he did contribute with some of the moments of magic that were key in those games. However, he doesn’t turn up for the entire 90 minutes in most of the games. We’ll get those one or two moments of magic per game, but that is not enough to warrant him to start games.
He is a great player to have from the bench, but he’s again unreliable when it comes to actually being available when needed due to constant injury issues.
I haven’t yet seen Elliot be faster than Shaqiri to be honest. By the way, the latter isn’t slow by any means. The intensity and consistency over 90 minutes is something else, here I agree with you, but I’m quite sure that at 18, Elliot can’t last 60 minutes in a PL game yet, at a consistent level.
Anyway, my earlier post wasn’t meant to pitch Elliot against Shaq, who are at completely different stages of their careers. My question was: is Shaq’s departure leaving a gap in terms of quality depth, and will the club make a move to compensate it? I asked this because I expect Elliot to leave on loan again.
But of course, if Klopp decides that Elliot is the solution, I’ll be very interested to see how he does, and will trust his decision completely.
It’s been a while since he and Origi made significant contributions to Liverpool’s cause, hasn’t it? Beside being poor stylistic fits, too… Shaqiri has immense experience but given his age, injury record and style of play, 'd sacrifice him for Elliott’s progress, for example.
Elliott is young and inexperienced but he’s at the same age Trent and Jones were when they started getting their first chances at Liverpool. That said, if the likes of Origi and Shaqiri are sold in time, there could be money made available to sign another attack-minded player and ease Elliott into his new role(s).
Yeah, both were near to insignificant last season. But it was a freak one, and while we had all kinds of problems at the back and in midfield, our front three remained fit for most of the season. So Klopp, in the name of stability, went with them most of the time.
Shaq will leave, that’s a certainty, so I’m not disputing that fact. But I’m just pondering whether it’s worth bringing in a new player to compensate for his departure, and thus improve the squad.
I can’t help to imagine what would happen if Salah and Firmino or Mané are out for a few months, who will then come in? Jota can take a place for sure, but the depth in quality behind that becomes then very thin. Fortunately, our front three seems made of kryptonite and are rarely injured. Hopefully that will continue (touch wood… ).
He was cheap and he did give us a few moments to remember but overall he is not a klopp type player and not fit or mobile enough and we will get back more or less the same fee we paid for him.
I would disagree there, I think Shaqiri’s one of the slowest players in the squad and I would guess Elliot is comfortably quicker than him. Elliot certainly plays with a lot more energy than Shaqiri.
I highly doubt Elliot is ready either, but one player is on a clear decline and the other is on the rise, I know which one I’d rather see next year.
Speculative punt at a very cheap price. If it worked it would have been a master stroke style move like it was with Robertson, hasn’t worked with Minamino either unfortunately. I’d say for the price we paid and the squad role he filled Shaq hasn’t done too bad though. Typically got goals, made chances and generated assists at a reasonable rate for the time actually spent on the pitch. Just ill suited to us unfortunately.
My take on Shaq is that he’ll be filed alongside many other lads who came in, did a decent job and moved on. Players passing through. All clubs have them.
He hasn’t set the world alight and he hasn’t been shit. He’s neither a legend or a flop.
He did contribute to us winning a European Cup and the League Title, and for £12m that’s not a bad return.
Best moments: The second half against Barca. Getting Mourinho sacked with two second half goals against Utd. Sinking the Ev in the title winning season.
Worst moments: Getting dragged off at half time against Southampton, despite three assists, because he was burning Klopp’s head out. Barely seeing him last year. Turning up in 19/20 with a sudden and inexplicable full head of hair.
