FA Cup 2023-24..Well I still love it

Definitely a red card and I haven’t even seen it!

Mcneil has bust his ankle looking at that

Mcneil stretched off from the sidelines.

9mins added for Palace to fuck this up…it’s games like these that diminish the prestige of the FA cup.

Tô be fair Everton do that to most games.

Players at Africa and Asia Cup. Suspensions. Injuries.

Like I said replays will be ‘fun’

That should be an Ev penalty, Anderson with a bear hug on Beto, shit reffing again

One extra player and Palace and Woy still playing neanderthal footy, hoooooffff it.

One for the DVD.

2nd time in 3 days that I’ve woke up at 6am to watch a 0-0.

No arguments with the red sliding and leading with the studs a 18" off the ground, contact minimal but still endangering the safety of a player and out of control

I once had a run of 4 consecutive games spread into a couple of years, of attending games live in my hometown. All 0-0’s.

Never, ever a red card. If Clyne hadn’t have playacted it wouldn’t even have been looked at again

Having seen it, I think it’s a soft red, but at the same time I see why its a red based on todays rules. Yes he didn’t make severe contact, but he was off the ground, studs up, and therefore could have been endangering an opponent - If Clyne is a few inches to the left, it could be a leg-breaker. Shame the ref didn’t stick with his on field decision - the use of slow-mo’s and stills always makes it look worse that it is, and as a result you lose sight of the fact it’s a fast paced contact sport.

The problem is that the refs are inconsistent - we’ve seen a lot of terrible challenges overlooked this season, and some, like the DCL one, where its an honest challenge, he wins the ball, and only makes minor contact with the opponent.

Everyone keeps getting hung up on intent too - but we know intent is not the barometer with which challenges are judged.

Finally, I think its absurd that VAR only applies to some games in the FA Cup - it’s massively inconsistent. If that challenge happens at a non-PL ground, he wouldn’t have been shown that soft red.

Lots of “bin of VAR” chat again this morning. VAR is fine, it’s the people running the damn thing that’s the issue.

If that would have been a foreign player media and pundits would be all over him.

The backlash from Sunderland fans is warranted and funny. Sunderland expected one thing, Newcastle did something different.

Of Couse, Eddie Howe is clueless on it - saying it had nothing to do with Newcastle - when its clear they were invited to make the bar neutral and subject to Sunderlands final sign off - that was not done. A case of Newcastle just doing what they want again?

Stills are basically what herberts on Twitter use to try to prove that something was a penalty/red card/war crime or whatever.

They do have their uses for factual points: did a ball cross a line etc, but as you say, a fast paced contact sport can only be judged on that basis.

When is the replay?

A confessed novice at the importance of the FA, League Cups to the fans.

Some UK ex-pat mates at our LFC pub were having a spirited “debate” to my question. The older fellows were saying “still prestigious”; the younger “not worth the time, really”.

I figure it’s somewhere in between?

One guy said “it was good enough for Fowler!”. That Fowler?

“Liverpool Football Club exists to win trophies.”

Try telling Shankly, Paisley, Fagan, Dalglish et al that coming fourth in the league is more important than picking up silverware.

Agreed, but this year we’re fighting for 1st not 4th! And have a decent chance of 2 other trophies also
