Florian Wirtz (AM) Bayer Leverkusen

It doesnt. Maybe a more reliable defensive line up might have mitigated the impact of now having 2 forwards who do no defensive work and like to work in the same spaces when they have the ball. But they had defensive issues going into last summer anyway and overlooked them. In part because they were concentrated on getting Mbappe

And the fact he himself as scored while the team has backwards is my point.

Lewis Steele saying “noises are positive”. Safe to conclude that refers to Wirtz and Liverpool, and not @Sithbare’s posts.

Looks like Real Madrid have charged to the head of the queue… according to the bookies, at least.

Might make Arda Güler surplus to requirements… :winking_face_with_tongue:

Not really correct analysis here. No less a person than Klopp did say this sometime ago. Its your defensive structure that creates the platform for attacking success. You cannot ignore the near complete loss of their entire defence…

Yes, there was a bedding in period for Killian, but that tactical problem was solved eventually, but not the rest of the problem…

They have enough physicality in MF, that combined with their full defensive lineup, can and does address issues upfront…

Since it is the Wirtz thread, I’ll comment on RMs defence too! We’ve all been a bit frustrated to lose Trent. And we were also building up a head of steam and hoping to sign Huijsen, before Real Madrid came calling.

That could have been half of our defence for next season, but it will be in Madrid!

Now for the fun part… let’s imagine they don’t settle, and that Huijsen’s lack of elite pace and Trent’s penchant for going walkabout open up massive gaps at the back for them. There will be no Van Dijk or Konate to bail them out. The opposition will exploit it, and the white handkerchief brigade will show their displeasure quickly.

Yes please.

I hope they don’t all get involved in his contract / transfer negotiations ala the Alexander Arnold siblings.

This is the first time I’ve called for your immediate banning.

Leverkusen didn’t sell any players to Bayern since 2004. All of their top sales (Kai Havertz, Diaby, Bailey, Son) are to the Premier League. Pretty good record. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

If even the Man Shites pull out because of the fee, there is no way we will get involved. I get it, he is young, had shown great potential but at 126m pounds, you cannot just be a great potential, you cannot even just be a good player, you have to basically come in and be a key player to win the league immediately. And no player and no amount of money can guarantee that.

I think football is really complicated now. Most players are system players; they need to be used correctly in the right situation. Folden played like Messi last season but looked totally lost this season. Same story with Sancho.

It’s very rare for players to excel in every system. I think in the last 20 years, we have only had a few players like Suarez, VVD, Allison, Mane that convince me they could do well in any system. Although Salah, Trent, and Firmino had amazing output for us, I do think they could easily flop if not put into the right setup. Then big-money transfers alone aren’t a guarantee of anything. But our club is pretty good at optimizing players’ strengths, isn’t it?

Wirtz is not only a great potential, he’s already one of the world’s best players in his position.

Let’s not act like we haven’t gone in big for players, broke our transfer record a few times in recent times and brought some expensive ones. There are no guarantees. You get a Virgil, a Nunez and only an attempt like Caicedo.

Now with the league won and some money to spend, also depending on sales, it really shouldn’t be surprising if we go for it. It’s not like we couldn’t possibly pull it off.

And that is precisely, we no longer need to buy ‘big names’, our coaching and systems ensure that we are able to identify players that might be under the radar and coach them into world class players. There is absolutely no need for Wirtz, not that he is no good but there will be players that are as good and maybe not as good as him now and available for a better price and that our coaches are confident of whipping into a world class one in our system. We bought VVD and Alisson for world records because we ‘absolutely need him’ but is Wirtz this? Nope I don’t think so.

Have you thought that this may just be a good PR reason? Makes them sound prudent/like they are complying with FFP and saves face on the possibility that the player doesn’t want to join the plastic dopera?
