What would be Virgil’s transfer fee now after adjusting for inflation ?
Wonder if the club’s shirt (even for kids) is worth the money it costs?
Rather pay 150m for the right player than 50m for one with too many question marks.
This is not the last time we’ll break our record, just how it wasn’t with any previous.
Around 94m
Another way to look at this transfer, and the money being laid out, is to add the fact, besides Messi in his prime, Wirtz looks to be in the elite club of players, that can dismantle teams that play with a low block. Considering how many teams play that way against us, it seems difficult to equate the number of extra points gained in such matches, against the final fee paid, after adding Wirtz to our armoury… Plus, we have this talent at our disposal for the next five seasons..!
Slightly budge on the transfer fee ?
I’m reading this as Leverkusen wanting a straight swap for Wirtz with Nunez.
That would probably be too less. Maybe a good 20m less.
Assuming that the inflation on the transfer market is 9% a year. Shouldn’t a 75m for a Virgil be atleast 72% higher. Considering Virgil has been there for 8 years.
This is about what a prime Virgil would cost.
No disputing that Wirtz has been overly high priced , but Liverpool’s revenues have increased over the years too. As has the inflation on the transfer fees.
And yet it’s only been a couple weeks, during which he’s been on international duty anyway.
It’s still incredibly early in the summer. There’s more than a month until pre-season starts. As long as he’s here by then that’s fine.
Is he though?
Personally, I haven’t watched him enough to form a solid opinion, but from I have seen I’d classify him as a player on his way to becoming world class, but not quite there.
Generational seems too generous to me, although I’d be more than happy to be proven wrong.
I’d blame Neymar’s transfer fee for this. That and the knock on effect it had on Barca going in for Coutinho and Dembele.
The oil cunts have succeeded in majorly skewing the market big time with their move.
Leverkusen isn’t in the wrong for attempting to get as much for Wirtz as they can. Because they know that their transfer targets would be inflated in turn too. Especially happens when the selling clubs know that they have money.
I’ve followed Leverkusen’s exploits from last season quite a bit. I hear you.
It’s far too early to call him a generational talent. But as far as the best player in Bundesliga goes. He’s there , as is Musiala in probably the same league.
That’s how good he is.
He ticks what we want from that position.
And he’s overpriced. No two ways about that.
I suspect that we may be seeing a knock on from our bid for Caicedo, because selling clubs know we will go that far if willing.
For us fans, this feels like a psychological barrier too far. We were one of the last big teams to spend more than £1million on a player (Beardsley, if I remember correctly) and we have had other that were breaking some record at the time.
Obviously, the club think that the total package is worth it. Clearly, any signing comes with a risk.
He’s got work rate , strength, pace.
He’s also got great creative abilities and pretty damn good set piece abilities.
I still can’t believe he cost more than Barnes (£900k?)
Ive read somewhere that , inflation adjusted , shearer would be the most expensive player in the premier league.
Barnes was out of contract (no Bosmans in those days). These days, Barnes would have been free.
Again. Very valid. But the club isn’t afraid to spend. And we know that FSG have the guys from the academy they can offset for this sale.
If the club feels that he’s the player, and we know that the club doesn’t go full Boehly. Who are we to deny them ?
We are a right well run club. Probably the best financially well run club World wide (considering that we do balance with trophies as well).
Bayer have succeeded in removing the excitement of this transfer. Greedy twats.
To call Wirtz a generational player is at best, an opinion. However, that opinion could turn out to be true or it could turn out to be a dud. No one can guarantee he will become a world class player so it will be silly to insist that he definitely will be. The only hope we have is that our club which has a good track record of buying players know what they are doing by triggering such a big fee for one player. If and when he comes, I will get behind him.
