Sounds like it needs to be 105 base plus 13m in addons from what I’m reading. So this will be a new UK transfer record of 118m, beating out the Caicedo record.
Look at this point, we’re past the point of no return so I expect Liverpool to pay up. 5m should not be the sticking point to bringing in a generational player who has already agreed to contract terms and would elevate our club to the next level.
We’re talking about serious challenge for the CL trophy, not just league title 21, although of course that is going to be another objective after securing Wirtz.
They are already asking a steep figure and he only wants us. They can take what is offered or they’ll have an unhappy player on their hands. No need for us to immediately cave
I understand not wanting to pay more. But at the time we paid the world record defender fee for VVD and the world record keeper fee for Alisson. Nobody regrets the extra money spent now. They were totally worth the fees. I’m hoping the same will hold true for Wirtz. Slot has made him his #1 target for a reason so I have faith this deal will work out great for us and bring the fans much joy to see Wirtz playing for Liverpool this upcoming season.
We were already serious challengers this season. We lost to the eventual winners by an extremely narrow margin and were missing several important players and the games were in the middle of a horrendous fixture pile up.
It will go through. It’s both far enough and close enough. The player wants us and Leverkusen also want to start using money from sales for their own plans.
Another way to look at this transfer, and the money being laid out, is to add the fact, besides Messi in his prime, Wirtz looks to be in the elite club of players, that can dismantle teams that play with a low block. Considering how many teams play that way against us, it seems difficult to equate the number of extra points gained in such matches, against the final fee paid, after adding Wirtz to our armoury… Plus, we have this talent at our disposal for the next five seasons..!
That would probably be too less. Maybe a good 20m less.
Assuming that the inflation on the transfer market is 9% a year. Shouldn’t a 75m for a Virgil be atleast 72% higher. Considering Virgil has been there for 8 years.
This is about what a prime Virgil would cost.
No disputing that Wirtz has been overly high priced , but Liverpool’s revenues have increased over the years too. As has the inflation on the transfer fees.
Personally, I haven’t watched him enough to form a solid opinion, but from I have seen I’d classify him as a player on his way to becoming world class, but not quite there.
Generational seems too generous to me, although I’d be more than happy to be proven wrong.
I’d blame Neymar’s transfer fee for this. That and the knock on effect it had on Barca going in for Coutinho and Dembele.
The oil cunts have succeeded in majorly skewing the market big time with their move.
Leverkusen isn’t in the wrong for attempting to get as much for Wirtz as they can. Because they know that their transfer targets would be inflated in turn too. Especially happens when the selling clubs know that they have money.
I’ve followed Leverkusen’s exploits from last season quite a bit. I hear you.
It’s far too early to call him a generational talent. But as far as the best player in Bundesliga goes. He’s there , as is Musiala in probably the same league.
I suspect that we may be seeing a knock on from our bid for Caicedo, because selling clubs know we will go that far if willing.
For us fans, this feels like a psychological barrier too far. We were one of the last big teams to spend more than £1million on a player (Beardsley, if I remember correctly) and we have had other that were breaking some record at the time.
Obviously, the club think that the total package is worth it. Clearly, any signing comes with a risk.
