Why aren’t matches telecast at 3pm ?
How much does a stadium actually hold ?
was part of the original deal when the Premier League broke away from from the rest of the football league, that they wouldn’t televise 3pm games to ensure lower league teams didn’t lose fans
It’s not just about the PL it’s about the FL but then look at their latest deal.
I actually like the idea of the new Championship deal and it really wouldn’t surprise me if more games end up being showed a weekend under the PL (Football league went from 250 to over a 1000 in this one coming in, in two years). Includes all 3pm international period league games being shown.
And this isn’t Sky for once, it’s the PL, the lawsuit is PL and the cash drained from them is PL.
The next football league deal will finish blackout and I expect the channels that show European leagues will be the first to argue a change.
Personally I’m not too bothered with my now tv subscription which is always reduced to 15-20 a month and I would probably have considered the FL under DAZN.
The fact you can’t subscribe directly to La Liga Tv is a bit shit.
I see it going two ways, you get PL Tv Via a service like Apple TV or Sky or someone with a couple of games out of that show on Sky which they blackout. MLB block outs the Sunday game on their service and it’s on BT Sports
Or the PL games will be spread over the weekend like Italy is increasingly going.
I’d be surprised if those 2pm games for Europa clubs on Sunday aren’t covered in the next deal
Sky Sports doesn’t cover it though, you also need BT and Amazon. Even then if LFC are playing at 3pm on Saturday you can’t view it.
Unless you’re well off or are willing to sacrifice other comforts, most football fans have been priced out of the legal route… and often those who can afford it walk away because they feel like an idiot paying astronomical costs and getting a quarter of the games their friends/neighbours are getting for a fraction of the price.
PL shouldn’t be looking at prosecuting illegal stream suppliers, as just like drug dealers, there’s always another one ready to take their place. Create a good value for money offering that makes illegal streaming unappealing. “Why pay a fiver a month for an unreliable stream which is minutes behind, when you can have the real deal for a tenner”.
And having their bills put up mid contract. Just the 8% increase in April even though you’re locked in for 18 months. Shit like that is another reason people feel cheated.
The £45 price is including BT (but not Prime).
I hope no-one does pay that amount. But the retail price across countries like Spain and Germany don’t differ a lot from UK. All are far too expensive, which is why I went VPN + legitimate French contract. If I had found a cheaper country where the VPN worked with the Sport provider and select games were available in UHD, I probably would have gone for something even cheaper than Canal+.
This.
People insinuating that it’s the Premier League who have enforced this 3pm blackout are way off the mark.
This has been in place forever.
Just tested it in my area, basic TV, Sky Sports and BT Sports (and a tenner a month for HD). €55 for 6 months and €130 thereafter on a 12 month contract… and would probably have access to 75% of LFC games (complete guess).
On the other hand, a “subscription” to an illegal streaming service, with 100% access to Liverpool’s matches, comes in at €60 A YEAR… apparently
Thing is I’ll probably head down the pub or just follow the Europa games on flash score next season unless my mate decides to subscribe again.
Might buy shares in some vpn companies,
I have a feeling there revenue’s are about to rapidly increaee
Thing is the music industry fought these battles and still succumbed to streaming (though that now shafts the artist more).
cable companies in Canada don’t even carry the PL anymore. that contract went to FUBO.TV, who only charges $130/yr. But DAZN streaming service retained CL, so fuck them and I stream the euro competitions.
It will all probably end up on one provider who will charge for it.
Like effectively the PL will provide the subscription costs for additional leagues like La Liga Tv or every league will follow that design and end up as packages by middle companies.
So, basically, Sky/BT paid over £5 billion for the Premier League TV rights.
I assume this is distributed to the clubs in a pyramid type payout?
Supporters want their clubs bidding for top transfer targets.
Supporters complain about paying subscriptions to said TV companies.
Hmmm
- The TV rights overseas are priced at 10B GBP and are worth much more than the UK rights which are 5B GBP
- The pricing for the UK rights can be made better by decreasing pricing for individual customers thereby getting more customers onboard. This is volumes of Scale. It might be difficult to adjust for volumes of scales for the relatively low population in UK but that doesn’t stop Sky from generating revenue in overseas markets as well.
It’s actually TV rights that are causing much of the problems with transfer fees and wages in the PL. There is an expectation that when every new increased TV rights deal is agreed, much of that will be distributed to the clubs. The players then ask ‘why aren’t or wages increasing proportionately given we ARE the sport?’ and so the circle of greed continues. If TV rights deals hadn’t got so out of control the biggest transfers would be a fraction of those we see today.
I think hadn’t COVID been sorted in a year, we would have seen TV companies reneging on their deals (RMC in France did), and that would have been interesting to see how that would affect transfer fees long term.
So I personally don’t see any problem with people fighting back against the rising cost of subscription. It doesn’t necessarily hurt the club in the way you are suggesting.
It’s been a “rule”, article 48, as far back as the 60s, but I’m not actually sure who is responsible for retaining it and who has the authority to decide it shouldnt apply anymore. I’m guessing it is the PL building the contracts around it, but I dont know who, if anyone, they’d need to get approval from to sell that contract. The PL is pressured in lots of ways to show they respect the football pyramid and my understanding is they are retaining the black out primarily because they know it would be a PR mess to break it. However, there have been stories of the EFL exploring streaming contracts that would include 3pm kick offs, and I think that would be the step that would allow the Prem to then do the same.
Don’t see the issue myself.
There’s more than enough televised football already.
Start showing Rangers/Celtic/Liverpool/Man Utd etc etc etc live at 3pm on a Saturday and local amateur clubs will only have one instead of a dozen handfuls of people watching them.
Junior clubs in Scotland and semi pro clubs in England/Wales will suffer attendance reductions, losing much needed finances.
