Former players and managers - general discussion

Maybe Barnes was just putting out a subliminal message in defence of him not being given ‘enough’ time or at least the 3 or 4yrs in the managers hot-seat… The fact of the matter is… The club/s didn’t part company with him because of his colour or religious beliefs… If that was the reason, they wouldn’t sign or play footballers in the team if they were of similar ilk…
They obviously had seen enough of his potential or (more to the point) lack of it, and decided to move him on as soon they came to that conclusion…!!!
If memory serves…
a certain King Kenny moved into the hot-seat after Barnes parted with Celtic.! Similar availability scenario to Bodgers and Klopp… Purely down to ability to manage and what is best for the club…!

A well-run company would soon remove their CEO if it was obvious he was not up to the task…

the final nail in the coffin for Barnes at Celtic, was this team been beaten 3-1 by a lower tier league team at Parkhead.

The Inverness team that won that night were a team of ex Highland League players.

Players from the Highland League are semi-professional.

this defeat was an embarrassment to Celtic and the fans were not happy, and he had lost the dressing as well (allegedly ) , so he had to go.

Up until this point the board had backed Barnes heavily in the transfer despite his lack of experience and coaching qualifications, spending near £15M, a hell of a lot of cash for Celtic in 1999-00.

Of all the players that Barnes signed only Petrov eventually went onto be a great Celtic player, and that was some years later.

so he was supported and backed at Celtic,
but at Celtic and Rangers for that matter, the fans can turn quickly if they dont like what they are seen

Maybe Barnes was just a square peg trying to squeeze into a round hole at Celtic… Simple as that!
I know the game you mention was at Parkhead… but if it had been played in the Highlands the defeat of Celtic could well have been by a greater score
I’ve visited the ICT ground many times…
and I can certainly testify that it is the coldest ground in the entire country to watch football…
If ya can play football on a cold day there… the players should all get a medal each…

We live in a racist society in the UK? It’s one of the most racially diverse countries in the world.
Racism exists everywhere, it’s vile.
But using racism as the only reason why British South Asians don’t make it into football is in my opinion incorrect.
ARD, you haven’t answered directly any of my questions.
For instance, black kids can make it in football, so progress there in the racism front but South Asians can’t because they are still seen as freaks (your word)? Really? Honestly?
Does culture play a part?
Barnes was a magnificent footballer but a crap manager. Klopp crap footballer but a magnificent manager.
Barnes says it was because he’s black and Sam Allardyce says he never got chances to manage big teams because he’s not foreign. So racism from white Britain against a white British.
I also don’t think kids see colour as an issue in the same way as adults. They will identify with Ronaldo, Messi, Salah, Mané whoever.
One final thing, I’m sure a black person/Asian etc would be honoured/thrilled to be positively discriminated.
5 or 6 years of hard study to get their degree and at the job interview in the field of their choice be told “We’re giving you the job because we need to fill our BAME quotas”.

I know it’s not offensive. People make generalisations all the time. See what I did there? I stereotyped the whole human race.

Damn. Absolutely terrible news; Clem was one of my favourites growing up and I still can’t believe we binned him off for Grobs.

A true gentleman and, in an age where the word is vastly overused, a genuine legend.

Rest in peace, Clem.

If it wasn`t for us winning the Title, 2020 could fuck right off.

RIP Ray loved you even when you were at Spurs.

We didn’t bin him off. He wanted out…in fact I believe he left for personal reasons but that is for another day.

Possibly our greatest keeper. Absolutely dominated his area when at his best. Great catcher of crosses…

Definitely England’s Number One. RIP mate

This is so sad. LFC legend, amazing goalkeeper, I remember being devastated when he moved to Spurs. But you’re right, we didn’t get rid of him, he moved for personal reasons.

RIP Clem, our best ever keeper, and that includes AB. He fought the fight against the big C for many years, and that took guts. I wish he’d never left us but that’s water under the bridge. Awful news.

RIP to Ray, condolences to his family.

I remember standing on the Kop in the early 80s, when Clem returned with Spurs.

He got an awesome reception, and I remember him applauding the Kop from the half way line as he ran to us, then jumping up and grabbing the cross bar, after which it shook for a good wee while.

I think we lost to a Garth Crooks goal that day.

Anyway RIP Ray, a true gent of a man.
