Former players and managers - general discussion

You can do wihout one, especially if there are smaller goals!

One of Kompany/Matthaus can rotate in that position. :sunglasses:

I think Iā€™d still prefer a keeper in there personally! My 5-a-side from Liverpool players:

Alisson, Coutinho, Barnes, Suarez, Fowler

Iā€™d actually prefer Reina over Alisson in a 5-a-side! Alisson would get in on the big pitch.

But yeah, I love it when people have different views on it. Didi went a bit not-so-obvious and put a mix of quality, personal taste and different teams heā€™s played for. I like that.

Me too but I do think people sometimes forget what itā€™s like to play 5-a-side. I definitely think you need a specialist keeper. The amount of goals you can ship if you havenā€™t got a proper keeper could be ridiculous. But then after that you donā€™t need a defender, two midfielders and a striker or anything structured like that. You need 4 guys who have a brilliant touch, good in tight spaces, have skills to beat a man one on one, enough pace to make space for a shot, eye for a pass, invention and tenacity.

Think Didiā€™s made a mistake not going with a keeper and going for the likes of Kompany and Matthaus. Brilliant 11-a-side footballers but not really suited as well to 5-a-side, imo.

I think most of these 5-a-sides are more lighthearted, a way to quickly name about 5 of the best or most favourites players they played with. I think 5-a-side can also differ from culture to culture, some probably imagine smaller or small goals and then you donā€™t really need a specialist GK but more of a controlling player at the back who can also defend the goal when his team defends.

Personal preference 5 a side of ex and current LFC players;

Alisson, Agger, Henderson, Garcia and Sturridge (fit).

Alisson would be no slouch with the ball at his feet. Agger would be good enough on the ball and able to punish an out of position keeper on a small pitch whilst giving some good defensive stability. Henderson would be all action/energy just constantly harassing when off the ball and moving the ball into attack when on it. Garcia would just be great with tricky footwork and creativity in small spaces, would drive them insane. A fit and in form Sturridge would be a nightmare in such a compact setting heā€™d score goals from impossible areas and just terrorise oposition.

5 a side:

Iā€™d put the pre-injury/ pre drinkdrving police chase Jan Molby in there. Supremely talented with both feet, never losing the ball, with a lethal shot.

The 85/86 mobile version would be peak Molby. In fact, for laughs I wouldnā€™t mind putting the post 90s version in there as well - stick him in the centre moving in a 1 metre radius area dictating the play with his passes and making everyone else move about.

A very tough one to call, but a fun one to debate. Can we clear up one of the rules are we allowed over head height because it may mean I need to scratch Crouchy.
The reason why it is a tough/good question is that you need to scale your admiration for a player to the generics of 5 a side (5AS) For example, IMO Mane wouldnā€™t make my team because his style is quite expansive in that he plays with the room given to him.
At the moment this is my first call and based on the players being at the top of their game and based on the players I seen play.

Alisson - GK - Safe as houses.
Molby - CB - comfortable in possession, delicate passes and doesnā€™t need to move much.
Gerrard - CB/DM - Or wherever he wants to play. Even if he just wanted to just commentate he would score and assist.
Suarez - AM - Tenacious, good in tight areas, will never stop running/hassling. May bite a few ears but its common at my local 5AS centre.
Fowler - CF - i remember when I played 5AS and actually scored a-lot of goals. They were mainly scuffed/bobbled efforts into the far corner from acute angles. So who else to lead the line but the Pythagoras of angles, the master of finishing and the Dad of Jesus the Saviour.

I tell you what, it would be funny to see the faces on the local teams when they strolled up on a Sunday evening

I mind reading years ago that Smicer was a bit of a hot shot at 5 a-sides during training when houllier
Was in charge

He was the player, the others wanted in their team

Five a side:

Kelleher; Gini; Thiago; Coutinho; Suarez

Queevin best with ball at feet and Gini and Thiago are great keeping the ball, passing and dribbling. Coutinho is a bit more contentious but I think he should be able to do likewise; alternatively another striker could play - probably Fowler - to partner Suarez.

Off topic I know but just kind of replying to a few comments above when the 5 a side discussion started. Alisson is starting to be rather underrated with his feet for some reason. Since when has that come about and why?

Grobbelaar, Mascherano, Gerrard, Barnes and Owen or perhaps just 5 TAAā€™s.

Because heā€™s so good at everything else you donā€™t realise heā€™s one of the best keepers in the world with playing the ball at his feet? Other keepers who are good at it stand out as specialists because they lack in other areas. Ederson for instance might possibly be slightly better with the ball at his feet but is way behind Alisson at other aspects so itā€™s like everyone talks up his ball playing in response yet there isnā€™t much difference between the two to deserve all the talk.

Absolutely. When he came he was doing outrageous things with the ball at his feet. I remember him galloping out to meet a ball and nonchalantly flicking it over the player as if that was normal. He got caught out once at Leicester and that was over two years ago, the T-Rex cunt from over the park had his say in the papers and since then people have downplayed his ability.

Since then heā€™s obviously been coached to keep it simple and in the framework of what we need but Iā€™m quite incredulous. Heā€™s played out absolutely laser like long balls off the ground and from hand, his first touch is sublime and we almost never ever get caught out in the high press because his passing is so good. Weird.

Really happy to see Clyne get a run of games (including an assist today). Hopefully heā€™s getting back to enjoying his football again.

It seems fitting that it would fall on Human Rights Day.

In many ways Biscan represents the best of us, right?
