I am a German and do live in Germany. But I have Sri Lankan Tamil roots.
I’ve just been driving up to Schleswig. Autobahn was a bloody nightmare, particularly around Bremen and Hamburg.
Anyway, we stopped for a coffee half way up, and aside from the café, McDonalds KFC and petrol stations, I noticed a shop called “Erotik”.
Yep, essential supplies for a German road trip: blue movies.
I mean who is driving along on a long journey and thinks, “Do you know what I need right now?”
That Australian bloke who’s always going on about wanking.
My hometown Zeven are between Bremen and Hamburg. And at the so called “Autohof” at Bockel and Sittensen are McDonalds, KFC and Burger King. And petrol stations like Aral and Shell.
I’m not sure whether this will be of much interest to our German reds, but Sky are showing the Tranmere vs Burton EFL Cup match from Prenton Park at 20:45 tomorrow night.
Tranmere are often referred to as the 3rd Merseyside team after Liverpool and Everton, although there are others such as Southport and Marine in the minor leagues, but Prenton Park was home to our reserve team between 2009 and 2018 and then our Women’s team up until last year.
I’m not sure whether there are any other Liverpool connections at the moment (Ron Yeats and John Aldridge and John Barnes have all managed them in the past.) It might be of interest to see what the stadium looks like.
Sorry if anyone switched on Sky wanting to see Prenton Park. Someone forgot to pay the electricity bill:
I’m sure there were wails of disappointment across Germany.

Not exactly news, but sad all the same. I was lucky enough to experience the best days of the Berlin scene and I’m too old to go clubbing these days, but it’s depressing to watch it fade away.

Obviously, I wasn’t around in the 1920s, but there are reasons to argue that the 90s were better.
In the twenties there was grinding poverty and enormous inequality. Only a small minority were able to enjoy the pleasures of the city. The image of 20s Berlin is based on the experiences of the elite ‘dancing on the volcano’. No doubt there was fun to be had, but only for a few, and in a repressive and febrile political atmosphere.
The nineties scene was much more democratic and open. Clubs were cheap, there were no dress codes. Bars, galleries, clubs were opening up all over the city in abandoned spaces, especially in the east. There was a feeling of optimism and possibility in the air. Of course, it couldn’t last, and by the millennium investors moved in and things started to become controlled and bland, a proccess which continues to this day.
Those conditions; a newly reunited city, the amount of vacant urban space, a preexisting alternative music and arts scene, a liberal political culture; will probably never be repeated.
It was fun while it lasted though.
