Get lost and find yourself! The Travel Thread

Speaking of Canada, I’m saving for that paranormal train trip through the Rockies. So expensive :frowning: But I just have to compare it with the Bern - Brienz - Luzern train ride.

Rocky Mountaineer? Or Via Rail

Probably flying to Calgary, car to Jasper, then Jasper to Prince Rupert by train, then back to Vancouver by ferry.

So in short, VIA Rail.

And I just notice I wrote paranormal. Sorry I meant panoramic. VIA Rail isn’t that bad yet.

I just did a few days up north including Prince Rupert for a few hours. Neat town. Beautiful scenery up there.

This photo is kinda underselling it? Compared to what we get from e.g. Bowen lookout around here.

Yes, the weather was not the greatest while I was up there. Mixed rain/cloud.

Heading over to Galliano Island in a few weeks, never been there before. 4hrs of work for a 2day trip.

Saw the Travel Thread. Saw COG was the latest poster

I must say you’ve really let me down, cynical.

Been to Bozeman, it was shut.

Flew into YPR years ago.

Captain “Sorry ladies and gentleman (in the days when you could use such a noxious phrase) but PR is fog bound and we can’t get in”
30 seconds later “Actually I’ve just seen a gap in the clouds, fasten your seatbelts, this could get bumpy”

Was like being on Startours

I’m off to Japan in a few months when all my medical treatment is over. Quite excited having never been there.

Will see some of the main places Tokyo, Kyoto and Hiroshima but welcome any ideas, experiences or suggestions from our worldly TANners.

How long are you travelling for?

I lived there for 3 years on Kyushu and loved the country, would highly recommend people consider visiting the country.

@legalalien lives in Japan and might have some pointers. I think he may live somewhere on Honshu so may have some ideas not too far away from where you are going.

If you’re in Japan on July 30th then you can go and see the Reds. We’ll be playing Yokohama Marinos on that date. Unfortunately, I live nowhere near Yokohama and I have to be here on the morning of July 31st, so you won’t see me there.

One place I would recommend in this part of Japan is the city of Kanazawa. It’s principal attraction is Kenrokuen which is a large traditional style Japanese garden. I know that may not sound interesting, but it really is beautiful. See link. Kanazawa also has a number of historical districts, including an area containing former Samurai homes.

You can get to Kanazawa by Shinkansen (bullet train) from Tokyo and continue on to Kyoto and Osaka.

Nara would be worth a visit too for it’s temples and other historic stuff. You didn’t mention Osaka. You really should go there. It’s a very lively place, especially at night in districts such Dotonburi. My wife is of the opinion that Liverpool is England’s equivalent to Osaka, with both places renowned for producing comdedians, singers and fanatical sports fans.

Yes, i second this and was going to also suggest it.

Summer festivals are (or were) very common in Japan. I would highly recommend looking out for these if you can.

I forgot to mention that Osaka is currently hosting an Expo. It runs until October 13th.

Maybe I’ll give the Expo a miss.

Here’s a typical review:

My family and I just visited Expo Osaka yesterday. Despite having purchased tickets for three days, we left early on the first day and will not return for the other two days. We chose to explore other places as Expo is very disappointing. Completely disorganised, discriminating non-Japanese visitors, with poor information and even poorer customer support, huge lines and waiting times for non-reserved pavilions and close to impossible for getting your hands on a reservation to a reserved-only pavilion. All in all, not worth the visit, you can do much better things in Osaka and around it. We’ve been to other Expo events and this one in Osaka is by far the most disorganised and hectic one. Long lines to enter the venue, long lines to enter pavilions or to grab something to eat, even to use the toilets, thus meaning that on a visit, you will be waiting in a line most of your time, and will only be able to see some pavilions. The most interesting pavilions will be extremely difficult to reserve and visit. The restaurants part of country pavilions, such as France, Belgium, etc, all had waiting times of over one hour. And please do not count on any support from organisers, as the personnel around the site or the the dedicated information center do not speak English and use their mobiles for translation. I advise all those interested in Expo to avoid this one and wait for the 2030 Expo in Saudi Arabia. If it will be close to the one in Dubai, it will be a memorable experience.
