I can’t imagine having that much of an entourage watching me hit shots like that. you can see in his practice swings he’s pulling his head out before contact. a $5000 set of clubs won’t fix a 50cent swing.
Sky’s promo for Royal Liverpool has us lifting the title but nothing of Everton.
That will boil their piss.
Over here in the States I’ve enjoyed the promo in the lead up to The Open. They keep looping a clip set to “You’ll never walk alone” with Beatles footage, the Liver Building and waterfront, LFC scenes, and some nice footage of Rory winning at Hoylake in 2014, as well as the surrounding scenery.
Made me feel dead homesick.
Heading for home in a few hours after 21 days away at work.
Really looking forward to seeing my armchair and TV, oh and my missus
Love this event and I’m told the 17th could be brutal if you miss the green….
But it is 3rd in the sporting queue tonight behind the opening match of the Women’s WC with the Aussies playing. Then comes the cricket followed by the golf and in last place the Rugby League.
The missus will be pleased with me drinking on the lounge flicking through a sporting feast.
Cmon Smithy.
Ah memories. Like yourself I learned the hard way.
A course I used to play regularly had a sneaky par 4 where the green was elevated but could be reached in one with a longish iron, provided you cut a corner, were bullet straight, zero drift to the right (trees) and could stop the ball on the smallish green. For over a year a lost balls, and failed miserably on this hole until one day a hit a soft 7 iron which rolled down the fairway on the left of the green into a large dip less than 50 yards from the hole. From there a soft little wedge to 12 inches. Nice birdy with colleagues screaming “Mexican” at my shredding of my friendly competition handicap.
I’ve finally, after a few years of wanting to, taken the plunge and got myself a few essentials to start playing (irons, driver, bag, putter, balls, glove, tee’s etc). I’ve got on to the work golf group, and have a couple of mates who are of a similar level who are keen to play, and a coupe of mates who play regularly that are happy to go out with me.
One essential I need to decide on is which shoes to go for. I live on the south coast, so metal spikes/cleats probably not needed down here. Was thinking of going for some spikeless, but a couple of people suggested the soft spikes. Any thoughts/experience?
Obviously the Open starting will only drive me into the world of golf this week. I think the wife is hoping I get bored of it in a few weeks - but I know this is going to take over my life sooner or later.
Tommy Fleetwood on -5 for the day , shearing the leed, some very good players still on the course.
It’s a bit of a crazy weekend of sport.
Golf
Rugby League - Challenge Cup final
Cricket
Women’s World Cup
Darts world matchplay
Not for me, I will skip everything besides the Golf …
Congrats on taking the plunge. It’s a great game, I hope you enjoy it.
Soft spikes, all day long, is the choice I would go for.
Metal spikes are not allowed on any courses I play (albeit in the States) and that will probably be the case where you play too.
If I played spikeless shoes here are some advantages - I could drive to the course wearing them, play in them, go into the clubhouse wearing them, and go home wearing them. Keeps it simple. BUT I would want guaranteed dry conditions, like playing in Arizona or something, otherwise they might be too slippy underfoot, and for the convenience I would sacrifice my game.
Even on a decent day in the UK, it would be easy to have a rain shower, or some drizzle, or depending on time played, dew underfoot. Spike less shoes are not the way to go in the conditions.
Soft spikes is my advice. Swing easy, in a stable stance where your feet aren’t slipping, and you will generate a lot more power and club head speed.
Good luck!
I own a pair of Adidas turf shoes, work fantastic on the course.
Just picked these up to switch my AP1’s over from S300 steel shafts to graphite. Won’t be a cheap conversion…
A friend of mine last year went through the process of having a swing analysis at a custom club place, and it definitely wasnt cheap. He’s never liked them but refuses to admit it because of how much he was bragging about going through the process.
We found out last week they must have sent him the wrong set as they are definitely shorter than they were supposed to be.
I worked with a CPGA pro for 6 years, after a few rounds together he insisted on taking me to get fitted at Golf Town. After an hour of testing, I was given a set of Titleist AP1s with Dyn Gold S300’s. 9 years later, those shafts are too stiff for me as my swing speed has dropped from 135mph to 120mph consistently. to confirm this, I bought a used set of Mizuno MP60 with R300 shafts and took them to the range for a few hundred balls. was back to hitting distance targets again, albeit a bit shorter than when I got the AP1’s.
So I’m getting my AP1’s swapped over to these 100gr stiff graphites in hopes it gives them some life again. I’ll sell the shafts they came with.
How do you measure your swing speed? Do you have an app for it, or is that just part of the fitting process?
club head speed at moment of impact, on a regular swing. part of the fitting process. they measure your strike pattern and club lie to ensure you’re hitting the correct angles at impact. base of the club flat at impact, not hitting the heel or toe of the club first as it will twist (they can literally bend the club head to adjust for this) and they can also adjust the loft angle as well.
defeats the purpose at a fitting to try and kill the ball. you hit your own clubs first for a baseline, then they’ll bring you 2-3 clubs of each prospective set to try out. I was playing TM Rac OS’s for 6 years, which are a cavity-back club so a change to the AP1’s wasn’t a big leap. much better strike consistency for me which was key with the slightly smaller head. the Mizuno are a muscleback so even more workable.
and sorry, my club head speed was not 135mph to 120mph. those numbers were not correct. I think I went from 115 to 100 I can’t remember right now. (for driver)
I play all my golf in Scotland.
Never had any issues with spikeless, the soles these days offer very good grip.
Good on ya mate and congrats on having a crack.
I’m an “OKish” club golfer with a handicap of 16. Play every week and it is my Men’s Shed time. I’ve stopped torturing myself and understand I won’t get to single figures so play for exercise, company and a good time.
My strategy (not advice to you) is;
- fuck spikes it’s about comfort when you walk 10ks
- always have booze during the round. 2 shots of rum during this mornings round…
- don’t overthink it. Guys carry on about having to play only with a Titleist ProV1, Stealth driver, simulators, club fitting, swing this and that - how’s that 25 handicap old mate. Just play.
Chipping and putting is the key to lowering a score.
Enjoy this addictive game.
I see Harman reeling himself back in to the chasers today.
25 players within 5 shots of 2nd.
All to play for.
