It’s the fact that not only have they left (want to leave fine), it’s they want back on it whenever they feel like it.
You fuck off and play in a 48 man 52 hole tournament League all you want, that’s cool, you shouldn’t then be able to come back to the PGA because you fancy a go at the Majors and to fill a gap when young kids filled in your place the week before.
You make a choice as for choosing more money it’s really like none of us, yes if a job offered 34k instead of 27k then it’s worth considering.
If I’m earning 20m mind what’s my need to earn 100m that’s just greed. Not to mention this LIV tournament is founded on sports washing, Golf wants a future it shouldn’t even consider connecting itself with anything fossil fuel related and that goes for the PGA tour and DP world tour as well.
No different to the PL when it was formed, or the European Super League proposals, or the creation of the nations league and European Conf League. Sport is driven by money, and eventually money convinces folks. Shame.
I don’t buy that. Players have no responsibility to play every tournament in a season. More to the point, a tour card doesnt even guarantee their entry into every tournament in the season. The only requirement is that if they want to play the following year they meet the qualifying requirements. Playing in other non-sanctioned tournaments has never been a disqualification or a criteria for voiding current qualification.
The justifications for going is morally objectionable, but the PGA cannot lean on that as a legal justification for protecting their brand and trying to stamp out competition so its using bad arguments like this instead.
The USPGA like any other organisation wants to keep its best players.
LIV wants the best players.
You have a choice, you don’t go oh well I’ll play for the Yankees this week and Dodgers next week. Restrictive practices in sport are a major issue and American sport but LIV brings nothing to the table in my view.
As for the PL and everything else, you don’t get invited you win the chance to play in it, it really isn’t that much different in its structure how it’s always been. Parachute payments are probably your only difference due to the chasm in leagues.
There is a hell of a lot wrong with every organisation in sport but LIV isn’t fresh air it’s just more hot air delivered by a horrible bunch of entities.
Who else is a massive fan of LIV who the PGA removed from their course use? Trump.
Playing loads these days, generally 3-4 times a week when I’m home from work.
Got royally shafted by the new handicap system which is a totally fucked up system.
Playing off 11 summer of 2021, had a net 4 under followed 5 days later by a net 6 under.
Gobsmacked to see the new system cut me from 11 to 1 in 5 days. Utterly ridiculous.
Eventually crept up to 7 which I can consistently play to.
Edit:- Title is inaccurate.
Played the Old Course in August in our club Autumn Prizes - 5 hours 15 fucking minutes.
I agree with your take on LIV. It is gross and everyone who has gone there is gross. But comparisons to other sports don’t hold water because that isn’t how golf is organized. Just because they are a PGA tour member they are not required to play in any given event the way the Yankees are required to fulfil their fixtures, or their players are required to show up and play on those fixtures. Nor are there any requirements on what they are allowed to do in the weeks they don’t attend a tour sanctioned event. DJ choosing to do something else, even playing golf elsewhere, the week of a PGA tournament jus isnt the same as a Chelsea playing just showing up one day to play for Arsenal.
I would have no problem with the the players being banned from the two main tours and the majors on purely moral grounds, the way rebel cricketers were banned for touring aparthied SA. But that isnt the argument they are using, in part because they too take money from the Saudis and so they’re leaning on an argument that doesnt actually work.
At the end of the day the points thing is the issue.
If they can’t participate on the DP World Tour or the USPGA they are going have to go on the lesser tours and achieve points there and I’m sure the weighting is less so.
Likes of Mickleson it isn’t going matter as a former Champ he gets invited to this for the rest of his days I believe.
After years of trying we finally got tickets to go and watch in 2017, but only to the wednesday warm up. Play was heavily affected by weather delays, with an early cancellation of play that day, but still it was one of the best experiences of my life. I’ve watched the tournament on telly every year so felt I knew the course really well, but had never appreciated until I was on the course just how hilly it is.
