so the saudi’s have pretty much taken over the entire sport in 12 months. this will make it a lot easier for fifa/uefa to sell out to them. all those clubs “pif” took over yesterday will be playing in the champions league in the future mark my words.
wonder how the players who turned down millions to stay in the pga tour feel, made to look like idiots.
To be fair, I love watching the highlights of the Waste Management Open for the party atmosphere.
I assume it’s going the way of cricket - whereby you’ve got purest format of the game, that sticks with the old ways (test cricket), then you have the tried and tested 50 over format, and over the last few years seen the fun and fast formats of T20 and The Hundred (not watched it). I’ve been to T20 local to me at County Level too - a good day out, but I do much prefer watching test cricket.
I think the PGA played its hand poorly. There were lots of reasons to criticize this and the players who took the money, but trying to black ball them required them to use arguments that were difficult to defend. These are independent contractors many of whom already play selected events on another tour. Only a couple of years ago the PGA invested in that tour, ostensibly the European tour, one that plays a significant amount of its tournaments outside if europe the majority in the gulf. Their criticisms seemed more like protectionism not a reflection of ethical criticisms most of the public were making, and once you understand that this sort of arrangement was always going to be likely.
Rory was hung out to dry. Showed integrity and was put in front of cameras to lead PGA defence. Missed out on $500m (though obv money will never be an issue for him). Then they went a did a deal behind his back.
Utterly depressing. Money wins as always
I’ll be honest, I really only watch the majors and most of the LIV guys are crap, however one or two have made it impossible to ignore and sadly I feel the game of golf is a forerunner for the rest.
Football will splinter two ways from how I see it, it will go down the route of allowing these teams into the CL or some teams will quit their current set up to play in a Asian super league.
At the moment we don’t know where that will go, this may end up being like the Chinese Super League (though they were keen on growing the game there, as was MLS, I don’t think the Saudi league have any interest in home grown players).
It will be when they start purchasing 25 year olds the issue will start to arise, though Zaha is alarming and amusing in equal measure.
They failed with their ability to create a Silicon Valley in the middle of Saudi Arabia so this was their next attempt at engaging with the west.
To be fair, that comment is consistent with the complaint Rory had about it. His complaint was never about the Saudis per se, but more about how the structure of the league was bad for the sports. It was a relatively closed shop that concentrated money among the current top players, and if successful would take attention away from the rest. That would include the next generation of players on their way up, whose success in what was left of the PGA would be valued less and less likely to make them be picked off by the big money league. This deal does appear to remove that issue.
Suppose the guys who weren’t very good and moved to Liv at least have their pay out now they will be back playing the also ran tournaments and the DP world tour.
To be honest, this news surprised me more than the Russians blowing that big dam in Ukraine. Guess I’m just naive. So DP World Tour and PGA are now jointly owned. Who’s playing for whom in the Ryder Cup? It’s just a scrimmage now. Also, this is going to catch the eye of anti-trust regulators on both sides of the Atlantic, seems to me.
It seems to me Rory has just given up the fight (‘made peace’). What else can he do really other than retire? I still admire his integrity. He grew up 20mins down the road from me so I’m biased though
If he really believes what he said about LIV and the source of the money, then round up those PGA players who were strongly against LIV and “go on strike”.
