Those are the details around the basic difference of valuation. Konate’s camp wanted more money than the club thinks he is worth. The club might have offered mechanisms by which he could prove otherwise, but those may have been seen as unlikely to be achieved.
Yeah salary is such a big component of costs these days that transfer fees are very much secondary. When Mo announced he was leaving, one of the big football finance guys did a quick back of the envelope calculations suggesting we could spent close to about 150m combined on two young wingers and still come ahead financially compared to keeping Mo for another year on his salary. Similar holds for Ibou - you could spend a lot of money on a younger replacement and still come out ahead compared to what it would cost to pay him what he wants. This also explains why sometimes it is ok to have someone play their final season and leave for a free if you are getting the final season at a decent weekly wage.
Of course, none of this factors in quality and readiness to play, but I do think fans get too wrapped up in transfer fees in general.
I did put another post that it is all about the money as to why Ibou has decided to leave and we believe that he isn’t worth what he wants, especially with his performances this season.
However, I have engaged the gray matter, added 2 + 1 and got 4 and now think from his point of view he probably thinks that under the current coach he doesn’t feel we or he will improve.
"Long after the final whistle had faded and Anfield had emptied into silence, Ibrahima Konate was still there alone under the glow of the floodlights, sitting where so many battles had been fought and won.
No cameras chasing him, no teammates around him, no noise left to hide behind. Just him … and everything he had given to this club sitting quietly in the air around him. It feels like reflection. Like the end of something he probably never wanted to end this way.
Whatever happened behind the scenes with his contract, whatever decisions were made away from the pitch, it’s hard not to feel a quiet sadness about it all. Because players like him don’t just pass through places like this they leave pieces of themselves behind in every tackle, every sprint, every late-night fight for the badge.
And maybe the hardest part isn’t what was said or unsaid .. It’s that we never really got the chance to say goodbye the way someone like him deserved.
According to one interpretation, Ekitike’s latest social media reply to Konate was to ask the latter “sign” a new contract. Doubt it would make a difference.
I say it is a fair deal if Konate was indeed offered a salary matching his requirements but would be activated thru bonuses or milestones. If the player has a strong affinity to the club and faith in his ability, I am sure waiting out one year should not be an issue.
120K wage difference * 52 weeks * 5 years gives us 31M to play around with. Not a trivial sum. And it would bring our wage bill under control as players know certain aspects, such as performance related bonuses, are non negotiable.
i’ve said this repeatedly. Yes, has made mistakes this season. But a lot of other times that he got the blame, the problem started further in front of him and he is the symptom and not the cause. And I’m sure he’s smart not a recognise that.
You could stick Maldini, Beckenbauer, Nesta, Cannavaro in our squad from this past season and with this past season’s team setup they would look silly at times trying to defend the indefensible.
I sat close enough to the pitch to notice his face when he has no one to pass to and the ball at his feet and the crowd is shouting at him to pass forward.
And ability to defend large spaces doesn’t mean it’s okay to be facing two or three of the opposing players bearing down on you with the ball with none of your midfield teammates in sight and you’re forced to make a decision one way or the other. with the frequency that our defence have had to deal with it. If you’re lucky then it works out and if you’re not you concede. Yeah, he’s not as good at reading the game as Virgil.
Who in world football is?
What is he supposed to do?
And then the shouting intensifies when he passes back to the keeper because he has no one else to pass to in reality. He must’ve thought “well if this is going to happen then I need to get paid for this to be worth my time.”
This whole episode is symptomatic of the febrileArne Slot feeding frenzy this forum has degenerated into.
Everything we know about Konate leaving is that…
a) He would ideally like to stay
b) The club would ideally like to keep him
c) But Konate’s wage demands are way higher than the club - keen to get the wage bill under control - are willing to pay out.
d) As a result the two parties are poles apart and a compromise can’t be found
But, such is life at the minute, every setback and disappointment has to be repurposed to put the boot into Arne Slot. To an outsider, it’s making us look like the worst kind of deranged, hysterical football fans.
Surely there is enough stuff that Slot is responsible for and has actually fucked up, without putting things that are clearly not his responsibility on him as well.
Konate not wanting to play for Slot may have played a part but we’ve been negotiating since November 2023 so him and his agent have had enough time to sort it out. Money is the deciding factor and that’s fine.
if you dont understand a manager can have a factor in a players decision to stay or go, and want to pretend its just the imagination of the mean nasty forumites, ill just leave in your little bubble.
