James MILNER: 2021/22

And he should have had an assist for the winner but Robertson spooned a relatively easy finish.

Milner is just the definition of reliable.

Youā€™ve forgotten the James Milner door on that list

If anybody had said to me 7 years ago when he rolled up on his free transfer from City that he would become a bona fide Liverpool legend winning the CL, the PL and just about every trophy itā€™s possible to win with us Iā€™d have said they were mad. For me his transfer epitomised where we were as a club at that time. A Mr 7/10 plodding about in the midfield on his last big contract before he was put out to grass. I couldnā€™t have been more underwhelmed. Itā€™s hard not to love everyone in this current team because they are such a great bunch of lads but right now I reckon heā€™s my favourite player. One of my favourite Liverpool players of all time. He needs a song. And a new contract.

Often ignored in the narrative about his move is that City very much wanted to keep him. Itā€™s commonly talked about as if they got rid of him and he landed with us as he needed somewhere to go, but City offered him an improved contract to resign and one that was worth more than the one he signed with us. He left for footballing reasons. Yes he wanted more regular football, but most of all he wanted a fair crack where his games would be based on his performances rather than always being handicapped on the basis of who cost the most and was the most high profile.

I think that game in 13-14 sums up his experience there. At half time City were not just 2 down but a distant second best. They brought on Milner and within 15 minutes they were level, looked the more likely winner with Milner the best player on the pitch. That they ended up losing was through no fault of his and yet within a couple of games he was back to the bench being used when they needed a role player.

Sometimes players who do things the right way get under rated for their actual ability, as if a good attitude and professionalism is enough to thrive at the prem level, or even the champions league level. But no one gets by at that level on that alone and I think Milly is a great example of one of those players whose actual ability is under rated because of the way he goes about his game and career.

Yes of course he was always a much better player than I gave him credit for. In my defence I will say that my opinion of him at the time was heavily influenced by how I felt about the club generally and that everything was just a little bit shit.

Couldnā€™t have said it better :clap::clap:

I think his leadership and experience was a real differentiator for this team.

He set the standard on off the pitch and gave everything on it.

Pretty much the perfect professional.

Posted a video link on the post match thread, but here is a tweeter post with the clearer video clip of Milly dared not to watch Tsimiā€™s winning penalty shot. Oh, and the Chelsea fans non-reaction.

He looked 25 in that first half, unlucky to be the deflection, he was out of place occasionally at right back but in CM before Hendo came on he showed he can still play.

And I said a few weeks ago I just couldnā€™t see him starting games anymore but heā€™s proven tonight and Newcastle he is still an important player who can over deliver when we need him to.

I think he helped others as well tonight, noticed him giving Elliott some encouragement

I think that should be amended that heā€™s proven it to you.

Thereā€™s many on this forum that has put Milner in their team on regular occasions to do a job right from the start. For me, Iā€™ve always argued that as long as he plays with sufficient rest, he is a genuine first team player.

Here is a quote from Klopp a few months back (@GermanRed posted it):

ā€œThe level he is at, physically, technically and in terms of personal desire and hunger for more, means he should play on for as long as that lasts. I hope it will be here and that is what I have told those at the club who take on these tasks.ā€

Of course, at right/left back he will get exposed. But even there, his qualities in taht position will outweigh the negatives. In midfield, Klopp trusts him a lot in the last 15 mins to shore things up. MIlner is one player in our team that knows when to flatten the player to help the team.

I hope heā€™s part of the post Klopp training team

This would be fantastic, whilst itā€™s not a thought I enjoy Klopp will move on eventually, but imagine that loss would be a little bit mitigated by having someone like Milner as an established coach. Pushing the guys mentally and physically, keeping standards high.

Heā€™s a modern day Ronnie Moran for sure.

Itā€™s going to be a very tricky operation to follow someone like Klopp, and continuity will be key.
Milner has the relationship with the players and all the attributes to be a key part of the backroom staff.

This guy never ceases to amaze me! :+1: :star_struck:

Excellent in his last 2 starts in the 6 role, it suits him Fab & Hendo as they have less running than in the 8 role and win the ball back in their own way. Also with Milly when he goes in for 50 50 challenges the other players are aware and pull out as they know he will be full throttle.
