Jarell QUANSAH: 2024/25

That would do it for me in all honesty. Again, I’m utterly biased towards the academy kids but the lad has shown he can play football. One big mistake against Man United has cost him a few months of self-confidence but Slot started giving him the minutes at right back regardless of his patchy form - and I genuinely can’t remember him having a bad match there in the last few months (maybe Newcastle away, which was one of his first games there if I remember correctly).

We didn’t have much of a choice when he was used at full back (RB so far). And as it turned out, a midfielder was picked ahead of him for a few games. For now, I don’t think it’s anything more than a emergency option. That’s also useful. We’ll see what happens next season.

Need a bigger sample before comparing him with Gomez and his role. But I certainly don’t agree that Quansah is “extremely limited” on the ball compared to Gomez. Quansah is pretty decent on the ball, manipulates well with it, can go on a little run or find good passes.

He’s a right footer that looked better at LCB to me than at RCB last season. Noticed that quite a few of his long pass attempts went out of play when playing RCB and hitting them to the left.

It’s not so much a dig at Quansah, more that Gomez’s passing range is massively underrated.

Both are reactive passers and not the guys who you would expect to force the play and be proactive.

Gomez looked very good in possession under Slot as he has always has looked for passes through the lines, but under Klopp our midfielders weren’t expected as much to receive the ball from the defenders under pressure.

That was until he got injured.

Again.

I honestly feel, based on my vague recollections of what he was like when he was here before, that Gomez’s crosses and passing are better than Clyne’s. But with Gomez I always feel it’s more his close control (if that’s the right term) that he’s limited in.

Gomez is better fullback than Cb now. He was actually our best leftback last year.

He is good enough to be backup fullback. But don’t want him at cb anymore.

This lad has done something really bad to earn such a jinx. I think it was his third or fourth own goal and I don’t think he’s the one to shoulder all the blame for the penalty but in the end, it was his foul in the box. I thought he played well for the most part but he’ll be judged on these moments, unfortunately.

By whom? By people whose opinions matter?

By whom? I hope the answer isn’t Carragher because I have news for him

But those are the people whose opinions are heard because they work in the media! I can only imagine the pressure young lads like him have to endure after their every mistake is dissected in front of millions people every day.

My big worry is that, ever since his blunder at Old Trafford, he’s shown that he has one serious mistake in almost every game he’s played since. I hope that he’ll take lessons from the past year or so and that they will make him a better player.

I’m not sure he’s made any serious mistake in this game.

I don’t give a shit about the media, that’s probably why.

EDIT:

Ah I see what’s going on here.

Do you have PTSD with this image burnt into your head because it was at your favourite ground?

He did okay today. Doesn’t change my mind about him needing a loan, but that means we’d have to bring in another body. Would we keep Quansah around for another year playing the odd game here and there, hampering his development, or bring in two CBs (which I can’t see us doing).

30 seconds left to play chasing a game we’re behind in, Oh I know, I’ll play a short square pass to my CB 10 yards from our own goal line. His team mates did him no favours out there today but he’ll be the one getting all the fingers point at, well, because he’s an easy target I guess.

Just needs more game time!

Doesn’t need a loan. Just needs to keep grinding…He has all the tools to be a top centerback…

Quite literally what we’ve been saying about him for months now.

I know there is a ‘scene of the crime’ thing. But I don’t think there is a lot Quansah can do about Virgil twatting the ball at him.

I think all of his own goals were scored by someone twatting the ball at him - but I don’t think Slot was referring to that.

For example, there was a moment in the second half when he let his guard down for a moment and Chelsea’s winger easily got goalside of him and into the box - those lapses of concentration happen to him at least once every match. Those are the errors that I’ve been referring to for months and I think it’s what Slot was getting at. I hope that he will iron those out soon enough.

I think Slot was specifically referring to the incident that led to the penalty.
