Did not see this one coming to be honest. Firstly, he’s how grown and we know how important those players are. And secondly, I thought Gomez would be more likely to go this summer.
It’s a good feeling for a lad who’s really a clear fourth choice centre back. Wouldn’t be surprised to see us have a buy-back or first option on him. But he’s not walking into that Leverkusen side. Suspect ETH reverts to a back four and Hincapie and Tapsoba will surely be the preferred pairing.
We’re surely going to have to pick up a homegrown option somewhere in our business or someone who can be registered as an U21 for next season at least.
Being in and out of Top4 doesn’t make a German club a 'Top Team‘.
Anyway, Leverkusen might still ride the Xabi wave next season (doubt it with ETH in charge) and qualify for CL but after that will find themselves back between 5th and 9th.
Quansah might turn out to be a decent signing for them but doubt he will be a stand out.
Quansah is a good player.
Still has a lot to learn and room to progress. We just weren’t offering him enough game time. So it was predictable that he would go somewhere else.
As for Bayer if they are so rubbish why did we buy 2 of their players?
You lot are getting me worried now.
It’s finding the balance between there was obviously a lot of quality in the squad for them to do an invincible season, and knowing which of those players are likely to replicate that form across a career Vs those who just had a season playing out of their skin. Kinda like that Leicester title winning team. Vardy, Kante, and Mahrez were all arguably world class at one point, the others just hit form at the right time. Leverkusen clearly have some top quality players, they also have players who managed to play out of their skin for a bit and will drop down to their actual level (not necessarily bad, but not invincible league winners).
As far as we go we’ve looked at the stats and hedged our bets that Frimpong and Wirtz are the two that will have genuinely great careers as opposed to being in a purple patch
No, they’ve had two strong season and we’ve bet on two of theirs being able to help us long term
As for Quansah, he is not poor. There’s a vast ocean between poor and good enough for where we see ourselves. He can absolutely perform well for a good team in a very strong league. His skillset, however, doesn’t particularly lend itself to our style of play. Germany will suit him more I think, and Ten Haag was able to revive slabheads career so I imagine he will do wonders with Quansah.
We, hopefully, have done better out of these transfers than them, but that is the nature of the game. Whoever deals with us wants to get a better deal than we get, likewise we to get a better deal than them. Just how things are
Also we know how much money they’ve got because we’ve given them just shy of 150 million for the two we’ve bought.
Feels like a great move for everyone involved.
Saying goodbye to a talented young player made a lot easier by the fact he seems like a bit of a weird kid.
If Slot doesn’t rate Quansah, then they should cash in while they can. But they absolutely need to add a CB this window, even if they’re inclined to shift to a back 3. They just don’t have any depth behind Virg and Ibou, with Gomez as unreliable as he’s been injury wise.
The links with Guehi make sense in that regard. But I don’t rate him as highly as some, especially with him listed at 6’0 (VVD is 6’5 and Ibou is 6’4). Obviously there have been very good CBs who have been shorter but they usually are elite man markers with major standing leaps.
