Not as handsome as VVD. But he’ll do

I think a few were as quick but it’s the summer and people were more bored.

Stats from Aug-2025. We have potential monsters winning aerial duels.

And they might not be allowed to head the ball..

I dont know if there is much substance behind Lynch’s take here so I dont know if this any more than guy down the pub insight, but it is at least based on a legit observation on the direction of travel for our transfer model. This was exactly the conversation being had about Ordonez a month or so earlier as well.

There are players Edwards bought that would fit this mould more though. Thinking about Markovic for one (not the best example I know).

Then again Wirtz and Isak are a shift and isn’t Hugo a bit similar to this mind. Szobolozai was hardly that developed eithier.

There was at least lots of data going back years on all 3 though despite their age. That includes international football and CL football for two of them. This guy has 30 senior appearances, and those in a league we had not previously weighed that heavily (i.e. more skeptical of good data coming only from the french league that was not matched by performance data in better competitions). Previously the threshold we worked around was 100 appearances for a player we were 1) spending proper money on and 2) expecting them to play and contribute early.

There doesn’t have to be a strict rule, it depends on the quality and people making decisions. A player can show more in 30 games that he merits a move like this more than another in 100.

We’ve seen fees for other young CB’s who went for serious money recently, who we either judged we didn’t want to go all the way for or really wanted but failed to sign. Yoro and Huijsen. Colwill also gets mentioned, but probably just a hard deal to get done from Chelsea.

Clubs like Rennes, that’s the type of seas where we hunt our fish most of the time. That Slot argument over some of our new players from last summer about games played before they came here is absolutely nothing new. We rarely get players who come with years of 50+ games (at the top level) per season experience, proven and serial winners, etc.

I’m not so shocked by the transfer fee, I mean I cannot comment on it since I don’t know the main thing: how good is this guy and what’s his style.

Or better to say, I’m gonna have to be patient and see how good can he be if he’s the one to start at RCB for Liverpool next season.

We’ll see what else we do at CB and in defence in general, because there could be one more proper CB or a hybrid type of defender.

Yeah, I think it is a bit of both, we have more cash now with which to take these sorts of shots on players, so while I think we are having to be more flexible, I’m not sure how much of this is as big a sea change as Lynch is making it out to be.

Let’s not forget that the money from Elliott still isn’t there and there’s a chance we won’t get that. CL status next season in question. Head coach position (from what we know) in question. Whatever happens, there should be an important focus on our defence this summer, both in terms of in/out planning to get the best possible balance in the 8/9 defenders and build cohesion in training.

The thing that doesn’t change over time is if we are trying to fill an important role in the squad there is a big opportunity cost to pay for bringing in someone who doesn’t work. It leaves you short a player you need and makes it more difficult to find room for the new player you’re still going to need to go and find.

We have been given an unusual level of insight into the thinking and the process the team has used to guide their transfer strategy. I think we’re all smart enough to understand there is a human at the end of it and we don’t have a push button approach that dictates to us who we go for an when. But it does mean when we do something that is not aligned with what has been shared with us it is at least interesting.

If only we had more data to go on we might be able to make a more informed judgement on him.

I’m patient and I prefer games to data. I don’t even know how to read into multiple data. Will wait for pre-season and the start of next season. I doubt I’ll be arsed to watch Rennes games, perhaps some highlights.

Yeah, I totally get that, but it’s not as if we are flooding the squad with players who fit this example, and we can argue that our squad has repeatedly been left short by not signing players that were available. It’s often difficult to get the balance right.

That’s mad, crazy. He has surely potential, and hopefully Edwards and Hughes know what they are doing, but to lay out such a huge amount for a largely unproven lad, is really breaking into new territory, at least for us. Cheaty and probably Chelsea have done it before.

Also, he’s not coming immediately, when we could use him nicely in order to bolster our backline, but only in the summer.

How many of that 8 are in the last 6-7 years?

Ultimately he is one for the future in terms of next season. I have no issue with that. If the deal gets the player we want.
