1. We did NOT go into the season with 4 CBs. That is stretching the truth to beyond ridiculous.

Fabinho is a DM who fills in at centerback. He is not nominally a CB.

2. Fabinho is NOT a massive upgrade on Lovren. There’s no objective data to support such a statement. Not in games played, performances, etc. You do not lead a team to the WC final by being a mug…

True, injuries are part of the game. So is having 4 senior CDs for most top clubs, as Klopp himself had acknowledged a while ago.

1. We didn’t no we actually went in with 5 in VvD, Gomez, Matip, Fabinho and Phillips just 3 of them are currently injured at any one time it seems these days.

2. Yes he clearly is. Actually there’s a lot, clearances, errors, tackles, clean sheets etc… Games played is not a review of performance and on performance Fabinho is miles ahead of Lovren. And you obviously can because he did although “led” maybe over stretching it a lot…

We had Fabinho, a DM as cover in central defence.

That cannot objectively be said that we ‘went into the season with four centerbacks’. That is forging the truth!

At this point Fabinho is covering the CB position, just as Milner is covering the RB position.

Multiple players playing multiple positions, as should be expected.

But that doesn’t and cannot make them nominally listed as being in the positions they cover.

Your position on Lovren is just that- an opinion, not backed by anything…

What about Rhys Williams, Nat Philipps, and Sepp Van Der Berg? That takes the number to six CBs and a DM in Fab for cover.

Just checked, there are currently 99 players out injured in the PL - us with over average of 6. Anyone any idea what would be the norm for this time of the season? What I am reading is that it’s his knee, but obviously not yet saying what the issue is.

All I want to know now is just how did this happen? I somehow smell a rat, but maybe it’s just me over reacting, poor Joe, this was his time for glory, and it’s been cruelly ripped away from him.

So multiple players shouldn’t play multiple positions then as you stated above, and we should just have 2 specialized players/ positions and then when they get injured, the others would be useless because of their specialization. James Milner is just rendered useless over Dejan Lovren. Wow.

Not sure what season you are referring to, but in 2019/20 season they had 4 CBs.

I said recognized CBs. Fernandinho was their 4th, but by the end of the previous season Pep had lost patience with/faith in Otamendi and Stones but couldn’t shift either of them. He therefore went into the season with a plan to convert Fernandinho into a CB and play him alongside French Eric, but knowing he would have to turn to one of two players he didnt want if his first choice was not available.

Man City’s main issue last season was that they didn’t strengthen the position they needed strengthening in.

There is a huge difference though between your plan coming unstuck as a result of losing just 1 player vs losing 3 at the same time. Those are different enough issues that we cannot reasonably say “it’s the same thing as city.”

I should think we all know that!

But how do the kids get a chance if there’s always senior players bought in? They are there for the cover.

When Trent burst on to the scene for us it was as cover for our injured players. Look at how well he’s done. Doesn’t mean it’s game over just because we didn’t bring in a 4th “senior” CB.

At what point does someone become senior too? Gomez is still relatively young. When did he transition? Is it age? experience? Number of games?

If we had signed say Ben White, who’s just turned 23, would he have fallen into the senior category?

Did someone cursed our CB this season or what… wtf is going on with all these serious injuries for our CB. I hope it’s not another ACL injury for Joe or else we are in big trouble. So now we are left with one makeshift CB in Fab and one Glass CB in Matip​:sweat_smile:. Definitely need to buy a CB in Jan now. I guess this is also a big opportunity for Rhys William and Nat Phillips this year and see if they can take the torch and run with it. Hopefully Joe’s injury isn’t too serious, we have so many games coming up this and next month.
I’m still shock why they would still play international games when everywhere in the world is imposing a second lock down and the virus is running rampant.

Ben White is a young player but has enough experience. Ditto De Ligt for instance…
