There are two conclusions to this:

1. they have been keeping their powder dry ready to spend big when required
2. they are more savvy in the market now and wont be led into a chase for the most expensive players.

Very much this. However, I would also add a third which ties in to the two you have given in that they have been financially constrained due to the pre pandemic spending, the costs of the stadium/hotel rebuild and fall in income from the pandemic itself so they have had to cut their cloth accordingly. However, since then they had those lucrative deals with an American firm which has put them on much firmer footing along with shifting some of the older contracts off the books.

It will be interesting to see if conclusions 1 & 2 still hold up going forwards. I would assume yes because I don’t think they really need to make the same mistakes Barca are making.
