Terrific is a bit of an overstretch…if he was so terrific then surely a European side or 2 would’ve come calling? Not sure anyone batted an eyelid when he left and I even doubt he would’ve done anymore as Harvey did in the same period being a squad player.

It’s good to see he made a career for himself at a good level after leaving us mind, not many do.

Well, he’s been a LOT more productive than Harvey the last three seasons. Star player at Fulham and one of the best mids in the PL last season is pretty terrific in my books, whereas Harvey can’t even get in the squad at Villa. I’m pleased for Wilson and expect him to do well at Leeds too. Unreal deadball ability.

I’d have Wilson over Harvey for the last 3 seasons too but I’m not sure that tells us anything?

Last season he was very good I concur, but it’s his first of note in his career (discounting the championship) and he also has 6 years on Harvey.

Even after being one of the best mids in the PL last season AND being on a free…he’s only gone and ended up at…Leeds. Ironically, Villa passed up the chance.

I wasn’t aware of that. :+1:t2:

I get that hindsight is a great thing. I am not a poster who is a Hughes basher, because, although this subject falls under his domain I am not privvy to all the information. There may have been pressure from the Finance team to make a deal, where it appeases or balances the books.
I try to refer to mistakes generally as ā€œthe clubā€. In my opinion, in this case the Club were guilty on their part of the deal by failing to carry out proper due diligence/risk factor or maybe they did but Books were more important than the players livelihood. Who knows?

Jones and Gravenberch are pretty shit in their showing today…Need a more defensive signing in the middle of the park…

Iv always liked Wilson, At present, he is more than a decent player and has a high level of technique.
People are entitled to their opinions but trying to compare Harvey (HE) to Harry (HW) is not a balanced or fair argument.
Has HW won U21’s Player of the Tournament in the last 3 seasons, been part of a Title winning Team, had to play second fiddle to the likes of Salah, etc. often coming on as a Sub and in various roles? No!
And, there was a reason for HE not getting game time at the Villa.

Let’s look at it respectively. HE and the Club came to a decision at the end of the last season that it was in the interests of both parties to move to another club. A similar conversation must have taken place when HW moved on. Unfortunately, HE transfer ultimately fell through after a season of little game time (so cannot be compared with HW).
Last night, the second half no one looked great, and that was probably more a fault of the Management, people forget he is short of game time and maybe low on confidence.

I think a lot of us agree that HE may be better moving on for the interests of both parties but let’s be balanced and not single him out.

Looked good in the first half. Second half, we looked disorganised and failed to compete. Whether, the intention of the 2nd half was just to give players game time of bad management I don’t know.

Nduweke and Trey the main positives.

Harry Wilson was certainly no better than Elliott during Klopp’s last season, and even during Slot’s first season despite not given lots of minutes. Elliott was absolutely fucked over by Slot’s preference of a small squad for 2 seasons, and it will take 4-6 months to get him back into shape.

I agree with you in that assessment. That is our opinion others may have a different opinion.
I think the main issue I have here (not with you) is people trying to justify their view unfairly, with hindsight and if they were being honest to themselves we’re probably criticising Wilson and shed few tears when he was sold.

Went to bed at HT, safe in the knowledge we’re looking the goods.

Not sure we need to buy any more players tbh, we’re flying and the squad looks set.

Bring on the real stuff!!

It’s a pre season friendly 3 weeks before a season with guys only back for a week going off.

Well we need to do something. We are painfiully thin on the ground.

I think this could be our worst squad in terms of quality depth since Brendan Rogers bought a ton of shit with the Suarez money.

There’s so many players who need to be moved on (Gomez, Jones and Chiesa are 3 for a start) (even though we are thin) and quite a few need to be brought in and that’s not going to happen in just under 4 weeks.

I cannot understand how its August and we dont seem to be doing anything in the market other than this Barcola deal with Fabrizio says will more than likely turn into a saga.

Im hearing these other players are going to leave (Macca, Gakpo) and thinking how can that happen? We have zero depth.

Our defence whoever plays there is appalling and its not a good start that the new lad still hasnt played. Frimpong is awful and now injury prone along with Bradley, VVD is mid 30’s and the jury is still out on Kerkez who is turning into the new Moreno - he has got nowhere near his Bournemouth levels and although its only pre-season he looks miles off it.
I would comment on our other CB - But we dont have one (Who is fit) to comment on.
Dont talk to me about Marma - he is shocking so when Injury prone Ali is out for his 20 games we have this bloke to look forward to. Ive watched the training sessions on YouTube and I dont think he has saved a single shot in training either.

As it stands its gonna be painful season.

I am well aware of that, I’m not quite sure what your point is. I provided a simple assessment of the game, I didn’t know I had to cravat my posts.

All legitimate stuff @Walshy07

It is potentially going to be a tough season.
But IMHO there is some reason to be cheerful.

Iraola needs to see who he keeps and who he needs to replace. I agree on RB and CB, but there are green shoots elsewhere. Nyoni is a factor in midfield. He might have shown enough to stall movement there.

RB might be Ramsay’s last chance. We really don’t know. I’m with you on Frimpong, he’s not good enough, either as RB or RW.
Chiesa needs a serious improvement to be a decent option and Elliot needs to lose weight and look like a footballer.

Overall, unless the young lads are much better than Arne thought, we have as you say a painful season ahead.

However…
If it means a proper rebuild, with a return to decent football and a promise of improvement for next season I would take it.

Said it before and I’ll say it again, this is the worst squad I have ever seen at this football club. I genuinely fear for us.

I do think the youth coming through is the strongest in a while, it is the experienced side of the team that is lacking, it’s a times this we need a Milly or Hendo.

Although we do need another player that is dominant aerially like Virg, hopefully that is Jacquet or Leonie and Ndukwe in a couple of years.
