Liverpool vs. Arsenal: League Cup Semi-finals (first-leg), 19:45 Thu 13th January 2022

He’s been slow to update the thread title though…not sure what it becomes however…

Seems a sensible outcome. Confidence in those running the game is so low that I am surprised. We lose the second leg home advantage, but since the cancellation is on our end, it seems fair enough. I would have some sympathy with the view that given the enforced break, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to let it whoosh through the squad. Almost like a band aid/plaster. Rip it off! Tearing it back here and there hurts more, and that’s what it seems we have had, with the drip drip of infections.

As for Taffarel bringing it in, maybe he did, maybe he didn’t. But it seems to me that this one is so infectious that it’s not worth going down that trail, as it is going to find us anyway.

Sorry to make you shudder. I think we are above it. Call it smug/arrogant, but this club has earned the right to be so. It would be nice to enter and win every single competition, but it is not practical. There is a reason we play the kids in this one, and also a reason why we don’t enter the charity tournament my mate organises. League cup is on a par with the Charity Shield in my book. I enjoy watching the games, but taking part and even winning does not contribute to the sustained success of this club.

Yeah can’t be trying to hunt out the person that’s brought it in - it doesn’t work quite like that - every member of staff at the club has a family and a home. Most of the staff will have partners that have normal 9-5s (like their own), their kids in schoold etc. Given the infectiousness of this variant, how it got in doesn’t matter. It’s how the club act and respond to kerb its spread as quickly as possible that matters.

Shame. Was looking forward to The Ribena Man to be the keeper, captain, manager, physio, doctor, bus driver, kit man, ball boy
, and also responsible for the all important half time oranges.

Alternatively cancel our home leg and play just the one leg at their ground, if both clubs agree. We reduce fixture congestion and make the remaining game more special?

Because of Sky sports I think.

Well the alternative was not to have a home leg I’ll remind you all how we made our way through the CL.

Doubt Shrewsbury happens now

That wasn’t aimed specifically at you, but your follow up post caught me out.

You really think the club has earned the right to be arrogant toward the league cup? I’m asking genuinely. All a matter of perspective I suppose, but I don’t at all agree with that viewpoint.

Well that is a sensible solution, postponing the away leg to the only free midweek before the winter break. Hope Origi and Minamino are back from the injury until then as well.

And regarding the Shrewsbury tie, I am not arsed if we play it with youngsters and maybe 2-3 first team players. So if it does not go ahead on Sunday, it can only be played during the winter break (in that case, Klopp will probably play it with kids only - remember the last Shrewsbury FA cup tie 2 or 3 years ago?).

It’s not really a winter break as the Brazilians and Minimino fly off to South America and Asia.

I reckon we will play a mixed side as I doubt Klopp will see it like he saw that as other clubs will be effected not to mention the AFCON going on as well.

Don’t think we have any youngsters left, The U18 FA match of Friday is canceled too so an educated guess is that the whole of Kirkby is influenced by it the U23 too.

I think every club has the right to be arrogant about the league cup.

Now that my irritation has died down, I am rather irked that we don’t have a match tomorrow. With kids in virtual school completely ruining my week off, a match tomorrow would have been a welcome escape.

I find myself wondering if they won’t be back sooner than planned, having tested positive.

Right. That’s quite unfortunate. However, to each their own.

Yeah some of our players probably will be available now, some may have even made the Thursday game.

I think it’s probably not 13 of our main squad with the injuries and the three off to AFCON.

I was actually looking forward to this but only if we are playing semi strong sides.

Zero point if your sending the entire U18s out (and I don’t think they are available).

I’d expect a team similar to the Preston match for Shrewsbury and a team similar to the second half against Leciester for Arsenal (maybe the odd one or two more).

I guess it’s wait and see for Shrewsbury, it would if happens probably now include a fair number of those who tested positive in the first and second group so it’s going be reasonably strong side if it does.

If I’m right in thinking we are only the third club to take this action, it’s what happens when you try and play through it as the Premier League arrogantly thought it could. Yes we could fulfill all our fixtures but constant travelling and playing in full stadiums will lead to this.

Even Everton

Well then we can only play Shrewsbury during the winter break. The problem is though that Shrewsbury plays its League One games during that period (on January 25th and 29th). Hence, the only possible date is February 1-2, since FA cup 4th round is scheduled for the weekend of February 5-6.

Second leg is now Thursday 20th and as things stand Arsenal are playing Burnley on Saturday 22nd. That will surely be moved, right?
