This is as close as I can get to an explanation. Send the first team out and there is a lot more pressure, and that’s not something they’ve been coping well with. Send out the kids with a sprinkle of experience and they can play with more freedom.
Allows for some “interesting” tactical options (Robertson and Kerkez?).
But by playing the firnge players they have the opportunity to get game time and show to Arne that they have the ability and desire to be part of the starting 11.
However, the other side, our main players get a rest and also then don’t need days off and which means Arne and his staff have additional days to work on our deficiencies.
We are weird as fans before the season started most wanted us to concentrate on the big 2, now we wantnus to play our 1st team in a competition that is considered to be not that important in the grand scheme of things.
Playing the team we do, as said above, gives more opportunity for rest and also give more time on the training pitch to find solutions.
Arne Slot on his team selection: “People who know this club and follow this club know that we use this competition for the younger players - to give them a chance to play [at Anfield]. We also have 5 injuries which hasn’t been helpful. Playing the same players is a big risk.”
I am of the view, every piece of silverware is a great asset in the Anfield museum to show future players that we are winners in every final. I am all for the youngsters to take a major part in these type of competitions.
