I’ve said for a while now that when assessing strikers at a young age you have to pay attention to that jump from U18 to U21 football. It’s essentially a step from playing against children to playing against adults. The average age of a team jumps from about 16.8 to 19.90.

What you tend to get is that young strikers score a bunch at U18 level because they are the oldest in the team and can physically bully the opposition or just use a bit more experience to take over games. Then they step up to U21 football and struggle a bit, goals don’t come.

This really shows you something, usually, about their long-term quality as potential Premier League players. Can they still score and dominate games when they are the youngest player on the pitch, not the oldest? Musialowski showed he couldn’t, Cannonier the same. Koumas and Danns immediately stepped into U21 football and started scoring - delighted for both of them that it has continued into the even bigger step of first team football.

Anyway, that’s a little hack to deciding which strikers could still score at first team level - look at their first year at U21 level. If they don’t score goals at 17/18 then they probably won’t make it. No one cares about a 20/21 year old striker scoring goals at U21 level.

They’ll be favorites, but no more. There won’t be a shock if we beat them (which is almost unfortunate to be fair, as I am sure many of us have loved the positive media attention over the Kids endevours  )
