Luis Diaz (LW) Barcelona

To split bollock hairs, it was technically @PeachesEnRegalia (not that he has many hairs to split)

@sweeting linked a post or article saying Diaz was already one of our higher earners.

I think even if he isnt, logic suggests his wage package is already higher than the £55k often mentioned (with that figure perhaps being a basic wage if it is anywhere close to being true and not taking into account his earnings from bonuses).

At the time he signed, Diaz was being chased by Barca, Spurs and ourselves. Given his age at the time (25?) I dont see why his agent would allow him to sign a deal that low without some renegotiation or transfer clause built into the contract.

Our first team wage for regulars at time was reportedly around £110k+, and i cant see him being signed only as a squad player.

It’s possible Diaz was on a 55k weekly wage when he first signed and has had a pay increase (or 2) since which was discreetly agreed internally and not picked up by any outsiders, so there wouldn’t be an updated record kept anywhere online.

He was bought in as an understudy to Sadio at first - or so at least was the idea, plus he was on 20k peanuts at Porto so it’s not that improbable. A vast majority of the squad probably do earn somewhere between 100-150k but I doubt we put every new player we sign on that to begin with.

Or perhaps the simple truth is that no one outside of the club and his people know how much he earns.

I think far too many people take all these numbers that are reported far too seriously, even when traditional bastions of journalism like the BBC or the Grauniad report them, they’re often wrong. Just look at that whole thing that @Limiescouse went into about Lallana’s (?) transfer, for example.

It’s in the best interest of journalists to make it seem like they know a lot, but they often genuinely don’t, and have at best a guess or something that someone’s fed them to influence a negotiation one way or another.

Unlikely though as the player, agents and club all benefit more from making any such wage increase public.

I would also expect the club to seek to extend the contract if they were looking to pay the player more than they were required to by the contracts existing terms.

Was he really though?

Sadio was notably already somewhat in decline and there appears to be little evidence the club were looking to extend his contract and more likely wanting to move him on to avoid losing another player on a free contract.

The club had even planned to bring Diaz in the following summer but jumped at the chance to get him a few months early because of their club’s financial problems.

It was definitely convenient for the club to have both here at the same time, but I never had the impression that Diaz was brought in as an understudy - the fee in particular doesn’t really support this idea either.

As for the salary, taking a lower salary in his early 20’s is meant to help him get a big money move to a club like ours where he can earn substantially more. He might certainly accept a lower salary initially as part of that move but not without some way of capturing an increase in value as Mid 20’s to 30 is usually the key earning period for a player.

As a base, probably not, but that’s what bonuses are for. It is unlikely we are also bringing in an established international player being chased by other clubs on a third or a half of what we are paying the first team regulars without something built into the contract to allow for the player to benefit from performing well during the key financial period of their career. I just don’t see an agent allowing that to happen.

Your use of stats to support Nunez by using Sadio and Bobby is just ridiculous and stat hating supporters will be grinding their teeth, to put Nunez in the same category as those two is beyond comprehension, the game of footy has a lot more tangibles than stats.

Ignore the stats and just watch the bloke play. It’s clear he’s not delivering for us what we’d expect.

And that’s not to say he’s a bad player. He has some poor habits but I think in a different system he’ll prove to be more effective than he has been here.

I’m not sure anyone can honestly make an argument for giving him another season if there’s decent money on the table for him and we think we’ve identified someone else we believe can offer more.

Stats are one aspect and always need to go with a bit of eye/brain and understanding of the game.

:joy: are you still banging this drum? Maybe try opening your eyes when you watch a match. Comparing Darwin to Mane or Bobby is sacrilege

If Diaz is off (which I suspect he is) we’d be better off leaving that spot almost exclusively for Gakpo (like we have done on the right with Mo) & then using the money to sign Stiller and Collins. Be huge improvements for Arne to call upon as options in that defensive spine. Darwin/Harvey to fund Wirtz. Kostas and Kelleher to fund Kerkez. Maybe find another Firmino type forward for what we paid for him. Squad sorted.

As we found out when we sold wee Phil, it doesn’t always have to be about replacing like for like with the next best in the market.

It is the comparison to Bobby and Sadio, they offered far more than their goal involvements.

Initially, I was hoping Darwin would come good as his XG was quite good but he didn’t convert, but he now seems to have lost the wort rate he had and his touch and decision making is for me holding us back

If he leaves think it will be Saudi. Barca are skint.

With Diaz and his wife already sending farewell letters this deal must be in closing stages. May be that’s why Edwards and Hughes are trying to close the Wirtz deal before the whole world knows we have 100 million pounds deal for Diaz from Saudi.
Wish him well. Good luck Lucho!!!
