If Diaz really wants to go and we get a good enough offer from Bayern, then replacing him with Rodrygo would work for me. Saves us from having Diaz and Salah both potentially needing replacing at the same time in two years… although at the cost of an already busy summer getting even more busy.
Yeah the main issue is the number of changes over a single summer. Potentially 5 new starters and a new primary backup in Guehi. And I guess Mamardashvili too. Gakpo might feel a bit slighted if we bring in Rodrygo, so there’s also that to consider.
Not to mention Rodrygo earns about 4x the reported weekly base rate Diaz does.
You’d have thought new deals for Mo and Virg plus sizeable contracts for Wirtz and Ekitike would add a chunk to the wage bill. The latter two would be offset somewhat by the departures of Nunez and Elliott but not fully.
Then even if Frimpong and Kerkez contracts roughly balanced out with TAA and Kostas you’d imagine Mamardashvili and a new CB will be earning more than Kelleher and Quansah combined. Then there’s the Konate new deal conundrum.
Do we have the room on the wage bill for another superstar salary like Rodrygo?
I have no idea if our wage bill could afford Rodrygo or not but we were willing to try for Isak, who you’d think would have been on a much bigger wage then Ekitike. So there should be some room there. If that would wouldn’t be enough then the club will know it and take it into account in their planning.
Diaz on 55k per week is a myth. He’s on about 140k per week. Rodrygo is on about 200k per week. Not that big a jump. We have a LOT of room in our wage bill thanks to being ran very well for the last 10 years or so, and sticking to a wage structure that has allowed us to keep several of the world’s best at the club for extended periods of time.
Pipe Sierra is a Colombian journo with ties to Diaz, has been on the ball through his transfer to here and his time here. He reported it a week or so ago.
On the English side I believe Ornstein repeated that information a couple of days after, and Ornstein is reliable
Point remains it is up to the club, we’ve been here with Suarez and Coutinho.
The former knuckled down and delivered the latter had a back issue until they stumped up the cash required for us to sell.
Ultimately if it the player who wants to leave and then sulks we will know that it was him who wanted to move to Bayern (after all they are really at such a pinnacle in Europe we just can’t compete ) alternatively it could be his dad wants more money for himself… sorry I mean his son.
So the club can wait for Bayern to pay up, he’s got 2 years and we seem comfortable in that.
Because unlike during Suarez and Coutinho eras you wouldn’t trade us for Bayern. Wirtz the best young German talent thinks so anyhow.
Sierra is Colombian journo with close ties to Diaz/his family. Seems on the players side they’re feeling confident of Bayern coming back with a big enough bid
