Manchester City* - 130 charges (and counting...) (Part 2)

Is there any way you can force the owners to sell…i suspect not.

They’d just appoint someone as the new Psuedo owner anyway.

No idea to be honest.

It almost feels like punishing the club is the wrong thing to be sanctioning

So your saying we should nuke Manchester?

I don’t think there is any prospect of title being stripped. The legal carnage would be appalling. Not just around league title prize money. What about teams that just missed out on CL football because these bastards had cheated their way to a place. Isn’t every place in the premier league worth a couple of million?

Any idea how the italian FA handled the fallout when they found a few clubs guilty of cheating?

Was compensation paid out to teams who might of missed out on titles or European football?

It is possible though, it was done in Italy without the financial fall out/ no financial compensation.

One title was voided, the other reassigned.

Not saying it’s not without its challanges, but for me that’s the right thing to do.

Whether it’s 60 points or 16, City will appeal so whatever the punishment is it won’t take effect until they’ve exhausted all legal avenues. This will drag on for years.

That’s coming anyway. Relegated clubs will be watching very carefully I suspect.

Not stripping titles is basically saying “you cheated, but we’re ok that you won, by cheating”

The potential for future legal proceedings really shouldn’t impact on any current ruling.

I would have thought that action would have been between the clubs anyhow?

A 60 pt deduction next season doesn’t necessarily mean relegation the following, this season yes but who know what happens next year.

That is only 1 aspect of it. If 8 league titles are stripped from the last 15 odd years, how will sponsors and TV broadcasters react when new deals are up for negotiation? Will Barclays or Sky Sports or TNT Sports or DANZ or any of the other broadcasters be willing to pay as much as they have for a competition that has just seen half of it’s most recent titles be stripped due to cheating?

Premier League will lose all financial strength it currently has over all the other leagues

There was a really interesting piece in the Athletic probably about 2 years ago now with a series of off the record comments from insiders at other prem clubs about what they think is an appropriate punishment. There was almost universal recognition that a single one time big points penalty was wrong because City would do a Juve and be back up in the prem in a year and challenging for titles in two years. What they preferred was a penalty spread out across multiple years, each big enough that it makes it damn near impossible to qualify for Europe that season, and across enough seasons that new signings would realize the entire length of their contract will see no titles and no european football. It is clearly something that had been discussed among the various clubs for so many people to have landed on the same idea

If so, the PL that is owned by the clubs should administer such a ruling?

Maybe UEFA would react by banning City from European competition for a period?

Suspect not though as UEFA can be bought out anyway.

If that were to happen the interest and the demand for PL football would go up, not down. At least in my opinion.

If there was legal proceedings after the verdict,

That would be between Man City and other clubs and wouldn’t involve the EPL?

Issue that isn’t mentioned is Newcastle. Do you think they just sit there and play nicely if City get off with a slap on the wrist?

That’s another reason why this is important.

Yes it would be between the two clubs.

The difference is though a 60 point deduction is a slap on the wrists. It’s much harder for those clubs affected to argue it materially changed the outcome of the PL those seasons. City would argue it’s just a financial irregularities. That they would have won the league regardless. Your arguing hypotheticals.

If the titles are stripped then the starting point of the legal action is that the league has confirmed their actions materially changed the outcome. The question posed is was that to the detriment of club XYZ.

I don’t think it should either. I just don’t think the league will want to open that can of worms.
