Marc Guehi (CB) Crystal Palace

Well it did happen quite quickly, there was interest but nothing massively concrete in our move and then Newcastle tried to get him and all of a sudden we acted on him and Isak.

I’m not an idiot I do remember what happened.

Like what RM did with Trent, we’ll do the same with Guehi and get him for free next season.

Hopefully he won’t go out a PL winner

Maybe, but we still need a CB this season.

I only just realised that Palace aren’t guaranteed a spot on the ECL and have to play the qualifying round. I wonder if maybe they are waiting till after that to do the deal?

Winning that qualifier guarantees 8 extea games and additional income so gives them a better idea of who they can look at. Lising that game means they only have the PL and domestic cups so wont be as desperate to bring in a replacement (or they could look for a loan deal to tide them over for 1 year)

If they play Guehi in the qualifier, is he cup tied in other UEFA competitions? I really don’t know the answer though its probably been answered 1000 times on here.

Its an interesting take, and if so maybe Liverpool are happy with that scenario.

One way or other, I think we have to sign a CB, and I doubt there isn’t some work done to sort this.

If we don’t sign a CB, Guehi or anyone else…will we be moaning all year like Arsenal fans over their lack of a centre forward last season?

If i remember correctly, i think the cup-tied rule only covered the same competition. So if you moved from Europa League team to another team in Europa League then you would be cup-tied. If you moved from E/L to Champions League then you would be fine to play

the same comp thing got changed after Coutinho to Barca as they bitched about not being able to use him. Can now play for two teams in a CL campaign

I remember them complaining about it but didn’t realise it got changed

If he played for Palace now he would have to wait till the new window of registration in New Year.

Yes, but it wouldn’t rule him out for the entire comp. I’m sure we’d be able to do the group stage without Guehi - just means he’d get more league minutes while Konate would get more CL minutes to ensure rotation and fitness

Guehi will be able to compete in the knockout stages. But ideally , the sooner we can get him. The better we can integrate him into the side.

The fact that we move so quickly for the players we absolutely want and need, Frimpong, Wirtz and Kerkez, in the window, can give us a hint that while we know we need a CB, Guehi is not a must have. We can start the season with Konate and VVD, and while its important to get a CB in, its not necessarily a must to get him in early, so I believe the club is bidding their time to get the right one in and at the right price. We must not forget that while we have splurged on Wirtz and seem to be willing to splurge on Isak, that we should still behave as a financially responsible club when necessary so I believe we will get someone in before the window closes at the right price.

Yes. And justifiably so.

It’s a must to get someone in early, surely? Gomez is injured. We don’t have a single backup centre back as it stands and the season starts next Friday. It’s not really acceptable for us to start our league title defence with Endo as our alternative CB option.

Perhaps it also affects his percieved value?

Pretty sure he could play in qualifying round for Palace and still be eligible to play for us in the league phase.

Its tough to keep up with the rule changes so not 100%, but I’m pretty sure you’re ok as long as the teams are in different UEFA competitions.

Their second leg play off game is scheduled for Aug 28 and that seems to me a far more likely reason for this to be done but pending than the Charity Shield. It would be a pretty big risk for a player in a role so needed, so you;d imagine if this is what us and Palace had agreed we’d have a back up option ready to go in case something happens to him during one of those play off games.

:new_button: Crystal Palace have rejected two offers from Liverpool for Marc Guehi.

Palace want at least €55m. The Reds do not intend to spend that much and are planning to move on to other targets.
