There could be lots of reasons for a Guehi delay to Liverpool.
Maybe Palace want 50M pounds and we only want to pay 35M pounds, and we are happy to let them stew, knowing the player wants Liverpool and will be on a free next summer?
Maybe Palace want to do the Community Shield first? It’s a friendly for us, but a major milestone for them.
Maybe Palace want to sign a replacement first?
Maybe the replacement is delayed because Palace are trying to appeal their participation in the Europa League?
Maybe Guehi was more of a priority for us if Konate was definitely going? Now Guehi is more of a ‘nice to have’ option because Konate has given us an indication that he will sign a new deal?
Just speculating, and obviously lots of maybes there, but there could be very good reasons, on all sides, why a deal for Guehi hasn’t been sorted yet.
I don’t believe it is either but if I were in Newcastle’s position I’d certainly be trying to make it so.
And just because we didn’t get Guehi doesn’t mean we’d get no one and Slot has even said as much.
I like Guehi but he’s not the only option out there. He might also think it’s worth staying another year and then having his pick of options next summer. Again though, if he decided to do that I doubt we decide not to bring in another CB.
Plus, if we don’t get Isak we’d still need at least one more forward so it’s not really a case of FW or CB, we need at least one of each.
I think they see him as an option but the fact that Endo is starting this alongside Konate would suggest he isn’t seen as much more than an option. There is evidently a gap that needs filling and I don’t think the club are going leave that unaddressed on the hope of Robbo and/or Endo feed into it well.
Maybe Guehi isn’t the option, but I’d expect we sign someone I can see that Greek lad probably being a deal we do. I’m not too bothered if we take it up to the line as long as we get someone in.
I think he want to add an experienced CB like Guehi and a young CB who we can develop long term. We need four/five options at CB considering Konate and Gomez’s injury records.
I certainly think it will be very careless if we don’t add another central defender before the window closes. After doing so much good work in the market, that is leaving ourselves very vulnerable.
I fully expect we will add one, but if not, it’s grounds for legitimate complaint, strange as that sounds after an amazing window overall.
Obviously, the earlier you do your business the better, and we have done that with most of our signings, but central defence is still lacking,
Like all good reds I love Robbo, but if we are seeing him as a central defensive option, ugh! Most teams in the Prem have a decent striker who can put themselves about a bit, and they will position themselves to try to go up against Robbo every time if he is playing there. Any time there is a corner, or a set piece, they will pile their big players around Robbo too. He would be on a hiding to nothing.
I would have thought if the club wanted Guehi enough they would have signed him by now, or there would have been much more noise around the move. I think we’re more likely to be looking at other options.
