Marc Guehi (CB) Crystal Palace

Ah, we’re pretending that we didn’t know what he meant.

Marvellous.

If he comes, ask him to sign a waiver (so he can point out to you how liability releases are rarely legally enforceable)

Can Ekitike play CB?

With all the great signings we’ve made so far, I don’t understand at all how relaxed we’re dealing with our defender situation. We’re one Virgil illness away from a moderate catastrophe. I hope we’ve secretly already signed Guehi, but perhaps there’s an agreement that we can’t announce it until after the Community Shield. Otherwise, I absolutely don’t understand this calm. It would be absolutely negligent.

If we don’t sign a centre back I will be concerned.

Meaning we’ll have a free pass at him.

The calm, the quiet, the lack of any other links anywhere anywhere else makes me feel confident there is something sorted.

Based on how this window has gone for them that almost certainly means Guehi won’t end up there.

Unless part of the negotiation for Isak is we step back if they can get Guehi to agree.

If this was the case - and I don’t believe it is - but if it were, then I’d prefer we leave Isak for next summer and get Guehi in. We absolutely cannot go into a season with only 3 senior CBs - one of whom is Joe Gomez. I expect us to bring Guehi in and maybe a younger up-and-coming CB this window. We aren’t hurting for goals in the side even without Isak - can easily come back in for him next summer after winning the quad.

Chill, Winston.

You don’t lose many matches scoring 6 goals a week.

100% agree.

What would be the point of the delay if there is something sorted?

Say that we’ve agreed with Palace and it somehow hasn’t leaked. Why would he not join immediately? For a glorified friendly that is the Community Shield?

Makes zero sense to me.

Often club want to bring in players first.

There could be lots of reasons for a Guehi delay to Liverpool.

Maybe Palace want 50M pounds and we only want to pay 35M pounds, and we are happy to let them stew, knowing the player wants Liverpool and will be on a free next summer?

Maybe Palace want to do the Community Shield first? It’s a friendly for us, but a major milestone for them.

Maybe Palace want to sign a replacement first?

Maybe the replacement is delayed because Palace are trying to appeal their participation in the Europa League?

Maybe Guehi was more of a priority for us if Konate was definitely going? Now Guehi is more of a ‘nice to have’ option because Konate has given us an indication that he will sign a new deal?

Just speculating, and obviously lots of maybes there, but there could be very good reasons, on all sides, why a deal for Guehi hasn’t been sorted yet.

I think we need Guehi this summer or someone of a similar calibre.

I don’t believe it is either but if I were in Newcastle’s position I’d certainly be trying to make it so.

And just because we didn’t get Guehi doesn’t mean we’d get no one and Slot has even said as much.

I like Guehi but he’s not the only option out there. He might also think it’s worth staying another year and then having his pick of options next summer. Again though, if he decided to do that I doubt we decide not to bring in another CB.

Plus, if we don’t get Isak we’d still need at least one more forward so it’s not really a case of FW or CB, we need at least one of each.

I think we are looking to shift a couple of players on, certainly two or three I can think of.
