Marc Guehi (CB) Crystal Palace

The only thing that will perhaps placate Guehi into not running his contract down is the knowledge that the move is already done. He’s just going to have to wait for 5 months. Palace can probably give him an increased contract (with no extension of the length) to ensure that he doesn’t lose money.

The money is one part why footballers do decide to move to bigger clubs like Liverpool. It’s only fair that having shunted Guehi at the last minute , they need to make up the financial loss till January. That is probably one way they’ll make amends with Guehi somewhat.

There won’t be anything stopping him playing in the latter stages of the UCL as well which is when we would need reinforcements the most.

I really don’t blame Glasner for this (even though he’s likely to leave at the end of the season if not before). Managers often outgrow the club. He’s looking to save his ass and by default , Palace’s season. If he had allowed Guehi to leave without having a satisfactory replacement , his ass might be in the firing line and thereby his reputation.

Any delay with Guehi’s transfer lies solely on the management of Palace.

  1. From not submitting the europa league application form in time.

  2. Not eligible for the europa league made them not get their first choice defender (Diomande).

  3. They then fucked around the transfer window trying to get some signings across but none that would meet the expectations of Glasner.

  4. Attempting to pull the rugs from under Glasner by selling both Eze and Guehi. Especially when it was agreed beforehand that only one would be sold.

  5. It’s being reported that Glasner was flexible enough to ask for 2 defenders as a replacement for Guehi. Which is fair. The permanent deal went through and the loan deal didn’t (largely because west ham promised minutes which Glasner wasn’t in a position to guarantee).

  6. After the complete shitshow , Parrish didn’t have the gumption to have a conversation with Glasner stating that they couldn’t afford to let Guehi go on a free.

But had he done this business with Liverpool at the start of the mid point of the window , he could perhaps have had his price of 40m instead of a reduced 35m. And still have enough time to get the signings across. Should have been done as soon as the charity shield finished.

couldnt garuntee him a spot wasnt it?..

i mean…thats football 101…play for your spot…earn it…

you’re putting too much stock in that rumour to be honest…if Glasner flat out told him he didnt have a chance of football youd have heard about it by now…anything other than that is an issue for Igor to back himself…

ultimately…even if Glasner said he didnt rate him directly to his face…maybe he just didnt rate him…his honesty should be applauded…

club cant just serve up any old CB to replace the club captain and expect the coach to nod and just crack on with it…

i feel for Guehi, i really do, he was in touching distance of his dream move…but sometimes shit happens, and Glasners first obligation is to the club and its fans, not Marc Guehi…

either Igor doesnt rate his chances, or Glasner didnt like what he saw…if the shoe was on the other foot we’d be happy enough with the result.

No, he said he couldn’t guarantee him minutes.

If you want to believe that’s basic football management, then fine. I think it’s being a devious cunt. Glasner knew exactly what he was doing.

Guehi already took points of Chelsea. If he takes points off Arsenal and City and then comes in in January - does that already qualify him for a league winner medal?

If he comes in January he’ll be getting a winners medal anyway

Yeah he’s bound to play enough minutes.

Is Glasner the second coming now? Pretty much everyone seems to think so. It’s hard to disassociate myself as a Liverpool fan however I cannot look past this being an extraordinarily selfish thing with relation to a club like Palace, who with all due respect, will tend to sell their prize players to renvest in the squad to build and for their infrastructure. To Glasner this doesn’t matter as he is unlikely to be there beyond another 12 months but the Club will be and they will be there without 35mil and the player as well.

At clubs that are going to be competing for honors year in, year out that attitude probably works but Palace are not in that bracket. Hes does excellent and they’ve won a major trophy under him but I can’t think the old adage of leaving something better than you found it would be true when he does depart. Palace are really on a hiding to nothing in this scenario with the only winner being Glasner, which is a pity. People are always banging on about no player being bigger than the club but that’s exactly what Mr Glasner has done here .

Why have Igor do a medical at all. Was it just a ploy by Glasner to pretend to Guehi that they were looking for a replacement?

When do we play them and when we do will he play - have a really warped picture of him sliding into a tackle with VVD and both coming away with an ACL…

The quality gap between Guehi and Igor is roughly similar to that of van Dijk to Maguire. I’m not surprised Glasner was unimpressed by him as a “replacement” for the club captain.

We play them on 27th Sept away. It’s never an easy fixture. Guehi is clearly not the kind of character to do anything intentionally nasty, if that’s what you’re implying.

Not nasty - just an accident. They can happen.

edit: I picked VVD, but it can apply to any outfield player.

None of the brighton fans think that Igor is a good defender. Why would someone who’s 4th choice for Brighton be a right fit for Palace ?

found this report on sky

They tried for Akanji, and they thought they had a solution in Igor Julio. He was in the building, he was having a medical, and then there were delays with Guehi and suggestions he might be returning to Crystal Palace.

Igor got cold feet at that point, because he had been told he’d be playing a lot of football and would be one of the first names on the team-sheet at Palace in Guehi’s absence. Igor’s team had concerns that if Guehi didn’t go, that might affect him. He’s played very little football for six months at Brighton and wanted to get minutes.

couple of other reports saying similar but nothing with direct quotes from Glasner or a source saying Glasner told him he wouldnt get minutes

maybe i missed something?

also…as per @Sweeting post 1699, maybe Igor is just a bit crap…its all good and well lecturing Palace on the way they ‘should’ behave if Liverpool come in for their captain, but the fact remains they are a solid EPL outfit, they must feel keeping Guehi until January and losing out on maybe 15/20m is worth the punt…fair fucks to Glasner aswell, doesnt want to see his body of work fucked over…

I think its pretty obvious Glasner has sabotaged the whole thing.
Why would he tell Julio that Guehe wasn’t going when he knew that he was having medical and filing goodbye video - hence Julio being in the building and being the replacement. Guehe was going/gone but Glasner has put false doubt into Julios mind so he decided to go elsewhere.
So now thats happened Guehe cannot leave.

But the deal was going ahead until the manager threatened to quit, so it isnt really the player or the money. Its the player and the manager or the money. But even then, the immediate reporting was that a deal would be struck this month for the move to go ahead in the January window (similar i think to the Carvalho situation but we dropped the ball and made good on our commitment)

OK.

so lets just say what you are saying is acurate…

why use the word sabotage?..its pretty emotionally charged…why not just say Glasner doesnt see Igor as a sufficient replacement for Guehi and spoke his mind…

Glasner is well within his rights to do the right thing by his team, no?

can we just step back a bit for a second here…and look at it from a palace fans angle? surely we’re not that far gone as a fanbase?

whatever Issues Glasner now has with Parish and Guehi is his cross to bear…

Why should Glasner accept a 4th choice CB for Brighton (who are rather shit defensively) as the 2nd or 3rd choice CB for Palace ? Forget even as a replacement for Guehi.

Glasner is well within his rights to torpedo the deal. He has to look out for himself , his club and their results first.

The mess up is Parish’s.

Either tell Guehi he can leave and stick to it. Or tell him he’s staying for the entire contract duration which Guehi is pretty happy to do (prior to the medical atleast)

Depends how narrow your framing is.

Football has largely moved on from an era of managers dictating personnel decisions. This is not only because they are often not good at it, but because in this era with how much money is involved and easily players move, there is almost a conflict of interest relative to what is good for the club. To manage that, there needs to be someone involved who balances the short term perspective of a (disposable) manager with the stability of the club.

It is understandable Glasner would fight for what he wanted. But given who Palace are and where they exist in the hierarchy, and how Glasner has come to be viewed, it is difficult to see his actions as anything other than self interest geared towards the maintenance of his reputation and career trajectory and without care for what is good for the club in the bigger picture.

I think one of the worst stains of a manager’s reputation with fans of their former clubs comes from financially mismanaging their situation and then fucking off to greener pastures at the first opportunity to improve their lot, and this is the obvious undercurrent of the situation.
